Job Description

Lead Hand - Hardscapes [Retaining Walls & Paving Stones] Wage: $20-23 per hour, not including overtimeLead Hand position will require a strong leadership role to set an example for workers on sites. The lead hand will conduct any and all landscape related duties, including maintenance, construction, machine operation and more. The Lead Hand will be responsible for gathering information from management and passing it on to crew members regarding proper procedure and installation. The Lead Hand will act as an intermediary between management, supervisor’s and supervisors when theyre not able to be present on a job site. The lead hand will be required in some instances to delegate tasks to other employees to complete certain tasks. The lead hand will also be responsible for safety on sites when in charge, making sure he or she is following the policies and practises outlined in Westerns safety policy. The above duties will transfer to snow removal duties in the winter months if and when a position is available.Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintenance Duties (pruning, weeding, watering, fertilizing and other gardening maintenance duties at various sites around Edmonton and area.)
  • General Labor Duties (Landscape construction including paving stone and retaining wall installation, rough and final grading, sodding, rock and mulch bed installation, tree, shrub and perennial planting, boulder installation, fence and deck installation, irrigation system installation, landscape lighting and general labor)
  • Machine Operation (Driving Company vehicles, including truck and dump trailers, Skidsteers, concrete saws or vermeers)
  • Perform duties and tasks related to snow removal during the winter months ( if position and work is available) including shoveling, use of back pack blowers, snow blowers, sweepers and other machinery.
  • Reporting to management with updates, questions or concerns regarding project details, safety concerns, or other issues.
  • Delegating work to laborers on site to ensure safe, effective and efficient completion of tasks.
  • Ensure safety of yourself and those around you is of utmost importance at all times.
  • Ensure safe and proper operation of equipment and tools including general maintenance and inspections.
  • Adhere to Covid-19 temporary safety procedures until told otherwise.
On days disrupted by weather, you will have the option of taking the day off, or performing the following duties:
  • Operational duties (data entry)
  • Yard Work (miscellaneous clean up and maintenance on machinery, if required.)
  • Shop work ( inventory, office/ shop clean up, building maintenance, paperwork etc.)
Qualifications:
  • 2-year minimum previous landscape experience, Including hardscape (paver patio and retaining wall experience)
  • Strong dedication to health and safety
  • Machine experience considered an asset
  • Previous leadership experience considered an asset
  • Must possess good communication and problem solving skills

Working Conditions:Normal Working Hours (Summer May 1-Oct 31)-7am-5pm Mondays to Friday (hours can vary)-7am-4pm Saturdays (hours can vary), Sundays offNormal Working Hours (Winter Nov 1-April 30)-7am-2pm Mondays to Fridays (hours can vary due to snowfalls)-7am-12pm Saturdays and Sundays (hours can vary due to snowfalls)-Overnights may occur on heavy snowfalls.Days off Per Week – Sundays and Statutory Holidays (unless on call due to snowfalls in the Wintertime)Benefits – Health and Dental after 1 year of serviceHoliday Schedule – 2 weeks notice for requested days off, 2 weeks vacation after completion of 1 year of service. Western preference is 1 week per 6 months, employees can take vacation days however they see fit.Job Types: Full-time, PermanentSalary: $20.00-$23.00 per hourAdditional pay:
