Job Description

This posting is for 1 Temporary Full-time position for up to 14 monthsThe Services Operations Coordinator is based out of the Strathcona Wilderness Centre (SWC), a municipal park that operates a full-service cross-country ski area with public trails, programs, and events for a diverse array of customers. Services include year-round day use and overnight accommodations in Lodge and campsites. Amenities include disc golf, trails, and offsite areas to host events and programs.In this role, you would lead and coordinate services, and perform operations research, planning, marketing, delivery, evaluation, and communications, to ensure all areas are offered at the highest level. This includes quality service for guests, high-performing staff, contractors, equipment, and facility and park spaces.The Services Operations Coordinator is a leadership position at SWC and is responsible for implementing the Strathcona County Recreation and Culture Strategy and the Recreation, Parks and Culture Business Plan.Responsibilities

  • Supervising (including hiring, training, scheduling, developing, and coaching) the services operations team which includes facility and park maintenance, contracted staff, volunteers, and practicum students
  • Ensure high-quality services operations delivery to meet community needs by organizing all training, development, work assignments, scheduling, and projects for services operations staff, either directly or indirectly. Create and review effective training processes and manuals, training matrix, and content
  • Develop and manage service operations experiences by planning, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating opportunities to ensure community needs are met.
  • Lead and inspire staff through effective change management regarding corporate, department branch, and Centre initiatives. Ensure staff have all necessary information to frame changes that impact customers positively
  • Research, plan, lead, implement, and evaluate Centre services operations and capital projects to ensure the development, operation, and continuous improvement of spontaneous use, rentals, products, and services
  • Work with contractors, department branches such as Outdoor Infrastructure and Operations, and interdepartmental teams to ensure all site systems and maintenance work are operating safely, effectively, and efficiently through annual plans
  • Collaborate with Recreation, Parks and Culture department teams, interdepartmental teams, and industry professionals to research new trends and collaborate to develop and create improvements to services delivery
  • Coordinate, monitor, and forecast financial resources to optimize staffing, equipment, and supply levels while maintaining service levels
  • Perform as part of the SWC leadership team to accomplish team supervision, leadership, and problem-solving
Skills and Abilities
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to provide direction, convey instructions to staff members and contractors, and interact positively with internal and external customers, including resolving issues and concerns and responding to requests as required
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, including the ability to prioritize multiple and competing requests for action
  • Financial and operational administration skills
  • Well-developed understanding of operational procedures, organizational structures, relevant sites and locations, established practices, and activities relating to outdoor services and programs
  • Ability to seek out ways to develop customer experiences and partnerships with internal and external stakeholders to generate innovative centre services
  • Ability to manage expectations of public, political, and operational groups – often with critical deadlines
  • Teamwork and collaboration skills to operate as a member of departmental and interdepartmental teams to manage site and park operations
Qualifications
  • University degree (Recreation, Business, Physical Education, or related discipline) plus 5 years of related experience
  • Minimum 2 years experience in park leadership or a leadership capacity
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License with less than 7 demerits (Outdoors Class 4 an asset)
  • OHS including WHMIS certification specific to centre operations (i.e., Wilderness Advanced First Aid)
  • Knowledge of the cross-country ski industry is an asset
  • Ability to work a weekly evening and weekend shift to provide supervisory support as part of the SWC leadership team
Conditions of Employment
  • Submission of Satisfactory Criminal Record Check
  • Current Standard First Aid, CPR, and AED Certification
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s licence and submission of a 5-year Driver’s Abstract with less than 7 demerits
