Takla Landing, BCGuided by Takla Nation’s vision, values, and plans, the Principal is responsible for providing exceptional educational opportunities through Nus Wadeezulh School.The Principal is responsible for developing and maintaining positive and proactive relationships with students, parents, advisory Committees, Chief and Council, Elders and community knowledge holders, and Band colleagues. Engagement of parents, Elders, and community leaders in defining appropriate curriculum and encouraging home- and community-based support for Takla students is critical to the success of this role.With the support of the Manager of Education and the engagement of the Councillor responsible for Education, the Principal is responsible for the management of all in-school and school-related activities, including field trips, language and cultural education, land- and community-based education.SPECIFIC DUTIES:LeadershipThe Principal is responsible for:Practicing leadership in a manner that is viewed positively within the Nation and by instructional and administrative colleagues, and that builds the support of those with whom he/she works most directlyRespecting, honouring, and adhering to all confidentiality requirements, the B.C. Ministry of Education Code of Ethics, the Takla Nation Code of Conduct and the Respectful Workplace Policy.Assisting in setting, then monitoring and achieving the educational and administrative goals as approved by Chief and Council, and monitored by the Manager of Education and the School Advisory, and the Takla Education Advisory CommitteeSupporting and advocating cultural content inclusion in curriculum and activities, in concert with other departments with related responsibilities.Developing, implementing and monitoring professional development plans for all staff, and, in collaboration with the Manager of Education, his or herself.Developing and maintaining positive and effective relations with internal, community, and external colleagues.Educational LeadershipThe Principal:Provides supervision and evaluation of classroom teacher performanceProvides direction and oversight for curriculum and delivery of curriculum to the established standardsEnsures the School meets all the requirements of the B.C. Ministry of Education curriculum and standardsEnsures all necessary assessment and learning materials are planned for, and available for teachers and studentsMonitors the change process for individual students and the school, using objective data collection instruments and techniques (i.e. DIBELS)Provides all required reports and analysis of information to the Manager of Education, Advisory Groups and Chief and CouncilDevelops feedback instruments and conducts teacher supervision and evaluation with respect to targeted teaching strategies and submitted units of instruction.Ensures that plans within assigned key areas contribute towards initiatives established by the Board and the Manager of Education and are evaluated.Ensures that staff members have the opportunity to collaborate with other professionals and attend in-service in order to improve their teaching performance.Responsible for required reporting to INAC for nominal roll and other reporting as requiredBecome involved in community activities that promote the school, education programs, and support relationship building with community members·Student Well-beingEnsures that the school environment fosters and maintains respectful and responsible behaviors.Ensures the safety of students while participating in school programs.Acts as the local attendance officer for the schools within the assigned area.Regularly and proactively engages individual parents, and the School Advisory Committee to provide information and receive feedback on student engagement, development, and well-being.Communications and Community RelationsThe Principal:Takes appropriate actions to ensure open, transparent, positive communications are developed and maintained within the school and the community.Ensures that parents have a high level of satisfaction with the services provided and the responsiveness of in-school administration and the Manager of Education.Represents the Manager at school events within the assigned area.Ensures that the school is represented in positive way in public forums around the area.Duties include:Engage in, contribute to, and accomplish the vision and goals of the Nation;Promote a positive work atmosphere and communicate in a professional manner that demonstrates mutual respect;Other related duties as assigned.SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:Valid BC Teaching Certificate.An appreciation of First Nation culture and way of lifePrevious experience in working with First Nation schools and education programsMust be willing and able to pass a vulnerable sector criminal record checkAbility to work effectively in a cross-cultural context with specific regard for First Nations culture and practiceProvision of a positive example of overall wellness and professionalism through the maintenance of a healthy lifestyle and a positive community imageKnowledgeable of Aboriginal approaches to education and learningUnderstanding the role of Traditional teaching and learning philosophiesKnowledgeable of the complementary services available to the communityStrong organizational, communication, rapport building, and analytical skills.Excellent interpersonal skills;Salary is commensurate with experience and education; and includes a comprehensive benefits and other perks as seen below:
