Job Description

Family Cultural Activity Coordinators –Community Services Department: Reporting to Community Services ManagerPosition Summary:The Family Activity Coordinators will work closely with the Family Care Worker andFamily Support team to develop and coordinate regular and ongoing healthy familyactivities - evenings and weekends. These activities will include cultural crafts, dancing,singing, making regalia, family sports and games, pot luck dinners and other fun familyevents identified by families. The Family Cultural Activity Workers will also be called onto assist in providing immediate and ongoing cultural support to families, children andyouth. This will include assisting in traditional ceremonies for Tla-o-qui-aht membersand staff and supporting staffing of the Tla-o-qui-aht family safe-home. These positionsprovides a critical role in continued commitment to ensure Tla-o-qui-aht First Nationperspectives, knowledge, and approaches to wellness and family strengthening arehonoured in our Tiic-Mis-Aq’kin Health Center Setting.Key Duties:The Family Cultural Activity Coordinators will be responsible for working with other staffto implement the Cultural Prevention Program. This program will build Tla-o-qui-aht’scapacity to grow healthy families. This project will deliver a culturally based family andyouth initiative that will focus on building the strength and skills of families, at the sametime, as growing the healthy parents of tomorrow through family and youth initiativeslead by project staff and local leaders. Key duties of these positions are to:

  • Work with the Family Care Worker on Case Management and Coordination of
services and supports for families and youth, as well as, providing supervisionand supports to families residing in the Tla-o-qui-aht family safe-home.
  • Organize and coordinate the delivery of fun, safe evening and weekend
programming for youth and families in Opitsaht and TyHistanis.
  • Identify cultural teachers, healers, crafts people, singers, drummers, dancers,
sewers and those with knowledge of traditional harvesting and food/ medicinepreserving and preparations to teach these skills to youth and families.
  • Prepare a monthly schedule of activities each month that will be shared in the
Tla-o-qui-aht Newsletter and on the Tla-o-qui-aht Website.
  • Assist in the provision of cultural supports to Tla-o-qui-aht Community Members
  • Assist the Family Support team with Tla-o-qui-aht families and individuals that
are in crisis.
  • Offer cultural support to Tla-o-qui-aht children, youth and families as requested
  • Foster interest and knowledge of Tla-o-qui-aht history, language, and culture.
  • Support cross-culture communication
  • Promote clear judgement and discretion in dealing with confidential and sensitive
matters.
  • Abide by Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation Confidentiality Agreement
  • Adhere to Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation Personnel Policy
Preferred Qualifications/ Experience:
  • Knowledge of Tla-o-qui-aht First Nations history, traditions, language,
communities and culture.
  • Proven ability to lead youth and family activities
  • Knowledge of family development, community services and supports, health
practices
  • Organizational skills, verbal/ written communication skills, time management,
interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge and experience with MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook) an
asset
  • Self-motivated with an ability to work independently, in a team environment, and
with minimal supervision
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work with Elders, youth and families
  • Acceptable Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector search required
  • Current valid Class 5 B.C. driver’s license and drivers abstract
  • Lifestyle consistent with the duties and responsibilities of the position
