Job Description

Family Cultural Worker –Community Services Department: Reporting to Community Services ManagerPosition Summary:The Family Cultural Worker will work closely with the Family Care Worker to provideimmediate and ongoing cultural support to families, children and youth; including co-facilitating individual, family and group sessions. This will include leading and assistingin traditional ceremonies for Tla-o-qui-aht members and staff and supporting familysafe-home. The position provides a critical role in continued commitment to ensure Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation perspectives, knowledge, and approaches to wellness and familystrengthening are honoured in our Tiic-Mis-Aq’kin Health Center Setting.Key Duties:The Family Cultural Worker will be responsible for working with other staff to implementthe Cultural Prevention Program. This program will build Tla-o-qui-aht’s capacity togrow healthy families. This project will develop a culturally based family and youthinitiative that will focus on building the strength and skills of families, at the same time,as growing the healthy parents of tomorrow through youth initiatives lead by projectstaff and local leaders.

  • Work with the Family Care Worker on Case Management and Coordination of
services and supports for families and youth, as well as, providing supervisionand supports to families residing in the Tla-o-qui-aht family safe-home.
  • Responsible to coordinate, assist and provide cultural support to the Community
Service staff and Tla-o-qui-aht Community Members
  • Must be available to take lead in ceremonial healing practices
  • Share and gather traditional plant and spiritual medicines for Tla-o-qui-aht
Members
  • Identify traditional healers and if necessary, refer clients
  • Assist with Tla-o-qui-aht families and individuals that are in crisis.
  • Bridge traditional teaching healing practices and western counselling practices
  • Offer cultural support to Tla-o-qui-aht children, youth and families as requested
  • Facilitate healing ceremonies for families
  • Foster interest and knowledge of Tla-o-qui-aht history, language, and culture.
  • Support cross-culture communication
  • Promote clear judgement and discretion in dealing with confidential and sensitive
matters.
  • Support the development and delivery of a Tla-o-qui-aht Parenting Program
  • Abide by Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation Confidentiality Agreement
  • Adhere to Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation Personnel Policy
Preferred Qualifications/ Experience:
  • Knowledge of Tla-o-qui-aht First Nations history, traditional ceremonies,
language, and culture.
  • Proven ability to facilitate and lead healing ceremonies
  • Knowledge of family development, community services and supports, health
practices and related legislation
  • Organizational skills, verbal/ written communication skills, time management,
interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge and experience with MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook) an
asset
  • Self-motivated with an ability to work independently, in a team environment, and
with minimal supervision
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work with Elders, youth and families
  • Acceptable Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector search required
  • Current valid Class 5 B.C. driver’s license and drivers abstract
  • Lifestyle consistent with the duties and responsibilities of the position
