Job Description

Performs field monitoring activities, spills response, and water sampling of drinking water supply, distribution systems, and effluent from industrial, commercial, and institutional facilities.Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • Knowledge of water chemistry, sampling procedures, industrial processes, water and wastewater operations; monitoring equipment (e.g., chlorine residual meters, pH meter); and quality control procedures associated with water sampling, field parameter measurements, and equipment operation, acquired through a 2-year college diploma in Chemistry or related environmental science field, plus 1 year of related practical experience.
  • Must be certified (or be eligible for certification) as a Water Quality Analyst or licensed as a Water Treatment Operator or Water Distribution Operator, per regulation.
  • Knowledge of and ability to follow policies, procedures, sewer use by-law, and legislation (e.g., drinking water standards, environmental protection, water resources, fisheries, transportation of dangerous goods, and health and safety). Knowledge of spill assessment and clean up.
  • Skill using, maintaining, troubleshooting, calibrating, and performing minor technical servicing of field equipment (e.g., pH, dissolved oxygen, temperature, turbidity meter).
  • Knowledge of quality control procedures associated with sampling, analytical parameter measurements, and equipment operation, and quality system audits, Standard Council of Canada, and ISO 17025.
  • Organization and time management skills to work independently, meet deadlines, resolve problems/coordinate own activities in the field, and adapt to changes.
  • Communication skills to provide explanations regarding sampling techniques, treatment processes, and environmental impacts using proper terminology; exchange technical information; respond to public inquiries and complaints regarding water quality and environmental spills; notify stakeholders of environmental spills; and participate as an effective team member.
  • Ability to create and maintain written and computerized records, environmental incident reports, traffic control plans; and assist to write reports using technical terminology. Ability to read and apply procedures, manuals, and quality documents.
  • Computer skills with ability to use software such as Microsoft Office and Access, GIS, and a laboratory information management system.
  • Must have a valid G drivers licence (or G2 and 3 years of driving experience) and acceptable driving record to operate corporate vehicles.
  • Ability to participate on a stand-by rotation for weekend and after-hours work for spills response or sampling requests.
  • Ability to adjust schedule to work evening hours to support program activities. May be requested to work weekend hours for same.
  • Ability to support and demonstrate the Region’s values.
