Job Description

Fabricates and installs long-term, short-term, and traveling exhibits, including walls, mounts, cases, exhibit components, furniture, educational interactives, and panels at the museum and historic sites.Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • Knowledge of case and panel construction, lighting design, mat cutting and assembling, framing, artifact mount-making, and fabrication skills using manual and power tools, normally acquired through a 2-year college diploma in a related field plus 1 year of related fabrication experience or a grade 12 education plus 2 years of related fabrication experience.
  • Knowledge of artifact handling, crating, packing and transportation, and materials properties.
  • Fabrication skills using a variety of materials, model and mount making, mat cutting and assembling, framing and minor electrical abilities. Skill selecting and applying paints, stains, and finishes, and working with adhesives.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply floor plans, fabrication drawings, installation instructions, and technical drawings.
  • Knowledge of and ability to follow policies, procedures, standards; building and fire codes; and applicable legislation (e.g., health and safety, accessibility).
  • Problem solving skills to perform exhibit fabrication and installation.
  • Communication skills to exchange information with external contacts and museum staff regarding technical requirements of fabrication and installation, and participate as an effective team member.
  • Computer skills with ability to use software such as Microsoft Office.
  • Must have a valid G driver’s license (or G2 with 3 years of driving experience) and satisfactory driving record to operate corporate vehicles. Ability to travel within and outside Waterloo Region to acquire fabrication materials.
  • Must have or obtain forklift operation certification.
  • Periodically flexes/alters daily schedule and is requested to work weekends.
  • Ability to support and demonstrate the Region’s values.
