Job Description

Enforces and conducts investigations, inspections, and audits for regional licensing by-laws (e.g., taxi, second hand shops and dealers, salvage shops/yards); regulatory by-laws (e.g., waste/sharps, water, tree cutting, sewer use, signs/work permits); and provincial acts (e.g., weeds).Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • Knowledge of law enforcement principles and practices acquired through a 2-year college diploma in a related field (e.g., Police Foundations, Law and Security), plus 2 years of related experience.
  • Knowledge of court procedures and practices related to evidence collection, preservation, and presentation. Knowledge of and ability to follow corporate policies and procedures, regional by-laws, and other legislation (e.g. privacy, traffic manual book 7). Ability to keep knowledge of legislation current.
  • Analytical, problem solving, and organizational skills to find, interpret, and verify information; identify problems, their causes, and generate workable solutions; plan work to meet timelines; respond to situations that require immediate attention; and maintain accurate documentation and files.
  • Ability to remain calm and self-controlled under pressure.
  • Communication and human relations skills using tact, persuasion, and diplomacy to handle controversial situations; provide information, advice, and support to stakeholders; interview and take statements from the public; present information in court; swear service of court documents before a Justice of the Peace/Commissioner of Oaths; and participate as an effective team member.
  • Ability to read and interpret by-laws and Federal and Provincial legislation. Ability to write clear, concise, and accurate notes; maintain records; take statements; write/complete investigative reports, tickets, will says, and crown briefs.
  • Computer skills with ability to use software such as Microsoft Office; internal databases (incident management, inspection, licensing, permit); provincial databases (e.g., drivers abstract, property); and GPS.
  • Must have a valid G driver’s licence (or G2 with 3 years of driving experience) and acceptable driving record to operate corporate vehicles.
  • Rotational shift work is required, including weekends and holidays.
  • Must provide an acceptable Police Vulnerable Sector Check (Level 3).
  • Ability to support and demonstrate the Region’s values.
