Job Description

Performs general roads maintenance activities on Regional roads, bridges and roadsides, including winter snow and ice control duties and general summer roads maintenance, primarily operating trucks/vehicles such as tandem/single axle dump trucks, stake trucks, pickups, and utility vehicles, and using hand tools and maintenance equipment on various maintenance activities. Lifts and carries equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 kg, and pushes and pulls equipment and parts weighing up to 100 kg independently or assisted. Work outdoors in varying weather conditions and other potentially hazardous conditions. Occasionally works weekends, evenings, and holidays during winter storm season and is occasionally required to perform emergency services the rest of the year. Occasionally works up to 15 hours per day.Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • Ability to read and understand policy, procedural and instructive material such as safety notices, equipment operation manuals, material safety data sheets, and product labels, and basic writing and arithmetic skills, normally acquired through the attainment of a Grade 12 secondary school education or equivalent*.
  • Functional knowledge of, and demonstrated ability, in the proper operation and use of equipment related to the job duties, normally acquired through 2-years* of directly related experience. Functional knowledge of road building requirements, including cross sections, excavation, installation of road beds, side slopes, ditches, line and grade. Functional knowledge of surveying procedures and ability to perform surveys related to roadway construction.
  • Knowledge of Regional standards, policies, and practices, and Provincial and Federal legislation, including the Ontario Traffic Manual, Occupational Health & Safety Act, Highway Traffic Act, Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act, and related on-the-job training, (e.g. Snowfighter II, First Aid & CPR, Defensive Driving, Confined Space Entry, Spills Management, Propane Handling, Bucket Truck Training, Crane Training, Chainsaw Training, Concrete Training). Knowledge of Ministry of Transportation Book 7 traffic control plans.
  • Ability to function effectively and safely in a variety of environmental conditions, including exposure to hazards related to the roads system.
  • Communication skills in order to receive and comprehend instructions, interact positively with supervisors, other staff, and the general public, and participate as an effective team member.
  • Computer skills with ability to use software such as a time and attendance management system (e.g., TAMS), and weather and road monitoring software (e.g. GIS).
  • Valid class "D" drivers licence with "Z" (Air Brake) endorsement and acceptable driving record are required to operate Regional vehicles/equipment.
  • Ability to work variable hours as assigned.
  • Ability to support and project values compatible with the organization.
  • Equivalency would be attained through Grade 10 secondary school education and 3-years directly related experience.
