Job Description

Location 1285 County Home Rd, Waterville, NSNumber of Positions 2 – One position Front Desk/Admin coordinator and one Animal Care/Medical coordinatorJob Competition Closes When position is filledJob Type Full TimeSalary $19/hr depending on experience, RVT designation compensation can be negotiatedA Nova Scotia SPCA Shelter Coordinator is a key member of the Nova Scotia SPCA team. This individual is responsible to ensure the smooth and efficient day-to-day animal care operations of an Animal Shelter to make certain they are compliant with the Society’s animal care protocols and procedures. We will be hiring two coordinators to work in collaboration with each other, one Coordinator will be primary assigned a front desk oversight including programs management (foster/volunteer), while the other coordinator has a more medical focus on the animal care side.ResponsibilitiesThe Primary duty of a Shelter Coordinator is to oversee a Shelter’s animal care operations to achieve the desired animal outcomes.Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Works directly with animal shelter liaisons, shelter veterinarians and veterinary technicians to implement best practices in disease control and medication protocols.
  • In participation with animal shelter liaisons ensures that all shelter staff are properly trained in disease control cleaning protocols, proper administration of medicine and vaccines.
  • Provide oversight of behavioral assessments of animals.
  • This position supports provincial animal care initiatives and ensures that the shelter is collaborating and has the resources required to achieve the Society’s goals.
  • Understand the impact of financial and operational changes and demonstrates strong problem-solving skills on behalf of the animals, community, stakeholders, and the Provincial Leadership Team.
  • Works directly with those responsible for maintaining the shelter volunteer and foster based programs to ensure proper training in disease control protocols and the administration of medicine.
  • Ensure policy compliance operationally and accurate and transparent reporting of statistical animal care data.
  • Provide excellent customer service at the front end while maintaining positive interactions with the public staff and volunteers in a fast paced, sometimes hectic and noisy environment while remaining calm, focused, resourceful and efficient.
  • Assist members of the public in person, over the phone and via email communication.
  • Plan, organize and oversee daily office operations ensuring all front desk staff adhere to Nova Scotia SPCA Processes and Policies while providing an excellent customer service experience.
  • Responsible for all duties related to the care of animals (cleaning of the holding areas, assuring that animals receive food and water, bathing and basic grooming). Provides humane handling and restraining techniques.
  • Ensures shelter staff maintain accurate records for animal inventory, health, medications, treatments, procedures and behaviour history.
  • In coordination with Shelter Liaisons, participating in performance management, annual reviews, scheduling, and training of shelter staff.
  • Other duties as required
Required SkillsIn addition to having the ability to travel and a valid Driver’s license, the following are some of the skills required of a Nova Scotia SPCA Shelter Coordinator.Leadership Skills: Animal Care Supervisors have to keep staff motivated, resolve conflicts and make hard decisions. Good leadership qualities and administrative abilities are essential.Time Management: Animal Care Supervisors work with multiple staff, managers and volunteers across the province, assist in crisis situations and perform reviews. Animal Care Supervisors must to have the ability to create schedules, order supplies and write reports. Ability to work under tight deadlines and pressure situations is essential.Math and Budgeting: Animal Care Supervisors are expected to keep and maintain budgets, and make sure Shelters are staying on budget. It is essential that the Animal Care Supervisor is good at computers and has extensive knowledge of marketing and sales.Decision-Making Skills: Whether it is dealing with staff, management, government agents, veterinarians or suppliers, the Animal Care Supervisor will have to make decisions that affect the Society. Having the ability to make hard decisions under pressure is crucial to success.Speaking and Writing: Animal Care Supervisors are required to have strong written and oral communication skills.QualificationsAnimal welfare knowledge, donor and volunteer relations, special event experience, marketing skills are an asset.Computer skills are necessary.Previous supervisory/management experience an asset.Animal medical knowledge such as a Registered Veterinary Technician or Veterinary Assistant with relevant experience would be an asset.Additional Information
  • Hours will be consistent weekly, however some flexibility will be required. One shift on the weekend will be required, there may be one or two evenings a week.
  • Driver’s license is required
Physical Requirements
  • Physical ability to walk and/or stand on your feet throughout a normal workday required.
  • Physical ability to lift and carry 40 pounds regularly.
  • Working conditions include working alone, working outside in varying weather conditions, frequent interruptions, and some evening meetings.
