Job Description

(Temporary, 13 weeks, Summer Student)Located on the traditional, ancestral and unceded lands of the Squamish, Tsleil-Waututh, and Musqueam Nations, West Vancouver is a vibrant community on the North Shore and home to parks, beaches, and to sports, recreation and arts amenities. Our dedicated staff deliver services, operate facilities and run the programs that enhance the well-being of our community.The West Vancouver Art Museum is hiring an Education Assistant to provide hands-on, career-related experience for a student considering a career in art education and museum/gallery programming for young audiences.The Education Assistant will assist the Education Coordinator to develop and assemble new teachers’ kits for the coming academic year, based on items in the Art Museum collection. In addition, the Education Assistant will assist the Education Coordinator to deliver the Art Museum-based summer Art and Architecture Camps, and will independently develop and deliver one class each week on a special topic. These experiences will build skills and confidence for the student, who will then lead the development and delivery of an off-site afternoon program for children or youth for the Harmony Arts Festival.The ideal candidate will:

  • be currently enrolled in graduate or undergraduate studies in Art or Art History, Architecture or Architecture History, or Arts Education
  • have experience using PC and Mac operating systems
  • be proficient using MS Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint to create, edit, and save documents, and Outlook to create, share, and manage e-mail and attachments
  • have excellent oral communication skills, including an ability to address individuals and groups
  • have excellent written communication skills, including an understanding of differences in writing for child, youth, and adult audiences
  • preferably have experience developing and delivering arts-based and/or exhibition-related programs for child and/or youth audiences
Please note that this temporary position is supported by Young Canada Works in Heritage Organizations and is subject to confirmation of funding. Candidates must register with Young Canada Works online and meet the Young Canada Works general student eligibility criteria: 30 years of age or under at the start of employment; a Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident or recognized Refugee in Canada; hold a valid Social Insurance Number; and be legally entitled to work in Canada. Applicants over the age of 30 may be considered but hiring is grant-dependent.The successful candidates will be required to supply a police information check with vulnerable sector and a copy of their credentials.
