Job Description

(Permanent Full-Time)Located on the traditional, ancestral and unceded lands of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations, West Vancouver is a vibrant community on the North Shore and home to parks, beaches, and to sports, recreation and arts amenities. We are seeking employees with a passion for public service who share our commitment to creating a complete, inclusive and livable community.The Engineering Construction Department has an exciting opportunity for an Equipment Operator 3– Backhoe position . An Equipment Operator 3 operates and maintains heavy mobile equipment of a complex nature in accordance to competency standards, safety practices, regulations as well as performing manual work. The successful candidate must be skilled in the operation of backhoe loaders; working knowledge in the operation and use of excavators, front-end loaders, and skid steers would also be considered an asset. The Equipment Operator 3 performs the following duties:

  • Operating construction backhoe loader equipment in a variety of tasks including the maintenance and construction of water, sewer and drainage works;
  • Performing a variety of utilities construction duties using the assigned equipment, which may include the usage of backhoes, excavators, front-end loaders, bobcats, etc;
  • Washing, cleaning and service repairs (add fluid, adjust brakes, replace bulbs, etc.) to equipment;
  • Performing daily equipment inspections and submitting inspection reports;
  • Ongoing mentoring and training;
  • Performing other duties as required.
The preferred candidate will possess considerable experience in the operation of various equipment as applied to general utilities construction and maintenance work; ability to operate equipment in congested conditions; knowledge of safe operation procedures and the precautions necessary to avoid accidents or machine damage; the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; and, mechanical aptitude along with adequate physical stamina to perform assigned duties in all types of weather.The successful candidate has graduated from senior secondary school , possesses minimum of a year of experience in the operation of construction backhoe loader equipment (with experience on John Deere controls), a valid BC class 3 or 1 Licence with air brake endorsement would be an asset.The successful candidate will be required to supply an acceptable Police Information Check and a copy of their credentials.
