Job Description

(Replacement Temporary Full-Time for approximately 12 months)Located on the traditional, ancestral and unceded lands of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations, West Vancouver is a vibrant community on the North Shore and home to parks, beaches, and to sports, recreation and arts amenities. Our dedicated library staff deliver award-winning services delivering programs, partnerships, and amenities that enhance the well-being of our community.The West Vancouver Memorial Library has an opening for a Replacement Temporary Full-Time Head of Youth Services for approximately 12 months or until the incumbent returns. Reporting to the Director of Library Services, this position is responsible for managing the operations of an innovative, high-performing Youth Services Department for the Library and supporting the Director with strategic planning, policy development, and service assessment as it relates to the Department. Responsibilities include:Planning, organizing, managing and evaluating the operations of the Youth Services Department in alignment with the Library’s Strategic Plan;Working collaboratively with local schools, community organizations, other District departments, library systems, and other organizations to design and deliver high impact services;Working collaboratively with other senior staff and in cross-functional teams to plan, organize, and evaluate responsive and innovative customer service, programs, and collections;Planning, assigning, and supervising the work of both permanent and casual professional and clerical staff, and ensuring staff have the support, training, and resources to successfully complete their work;Assigning, training, directing, and evaluating the work of staff in the Youth Services Department;Preparing and managing the department’s operating and capital budgets;Planning and coordinating collection development for print, multimedia, and digital formats;Representing the library on professional committees and at meetings; andParticipating in other duties and special projects as assigned.The preferred candidate will possess: considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of children’s and teen librarianship and of the objectives, organization, and procedures of the library; considerable knowledge of the methods, techniques, practices, and procedures related to the management of the department and implementation of library programs, projects, services, technologies, and policies; high-functioning communication, time management and prioritization skills; a proven dedication to excellence in customer service; and the ability to effectively communicate the value of library and particularly youth services to a variety of audiences. This position has a robust public speaking, presentation and advocacy portfolio.The successful candidate has completed a Master’s Degree in Library Science from an accredited Library school plus several years of children’s and/or teen service experience, as well as supervisory experience, OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.A valid BC Driver’s License and access to a vehicle are required.
