Together with our lands, our customs and traditions are the foundations of who we are as Skwxwú7meshABOUT THE OPPORTUNITYActs as a liaison officer between the schools in District #44, District #45, Independent/Private and Parochial schools, the Squamish Nation Ayás Mén̓men Child and Family Services Department and the homes of Squamish Nation students. This position counsels students and parents in their homes and in the school with respect to student problems, available programs and services. Provides frontline academic, social, emotional, cultural and overall support to students. Makes appropriate referrals to social services, Ayás Mén̓men Child and Family Services Department, tutoring services, community health representative, family counsellor or therapist. Receives requests for assistance from families or schools.Typical Duties & Responsibilities:Attends school-based resource team (SBRT) meetings and opens new cases.Conducts student counselling.Conducts parents meetings at an agreed upon venue.Creates and implements remedial action plans for each case.Receives requests, sets up support services and manages tutoring pool.Acts as a liaison and builds relationships with parents and community.Acts as a Squamish Nation Ta7lnew̓ás Education, Employment and Training Department and community representative.Provides necessary information for Nominal roll process for schools in District #44, District #45, Independent/Private and Parochial schools.Keeps records and presents reports.Supports student transitions.Undertakes special projects, educational, cultural and spiritual that promote success of Squamish Nation students.Adheres to workplace health and safety policies, safe work practices and procedures.Contributes cooperatively to the Squamish Nation Education, Employment and Training team to achieve position and department goals.Education, Level of Experience & Hiring Requirements:Bachelor’s Degree in Education or Student Counselling from a recognized post-secondary institution.2 - 3 years of directly-related experience including primary grade student counselling, or early childhood education is required. Background should include experience with the tracking of numbers on spreadsheets, reconciliation of accounts, meeting facilitation and advanced knowledge of available education resources in the community.As career progresses, incumbent will be required to successfully complete job-required, short-term upgrading, training and courses relating to primary classroom management, Squamish language, first nation’s child development, curriculum development, language immersion, etc.Experience as an intermediate level user of the Internet, Microsoft Office Applications i.e. Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.Working experience with a large scale computerized database system. Experience with JD Edwards is an asset.Experience in a First Nation’s education environment is a definite asset.Experience working in a First Nations environment is preferred.Must have a valid BC Driver’s License Class 4 or 5. Class 7N may be considered.Must have access to a reliable vehicle and current auto insurance that meets company.Must successfully complete Criminal Records Check with Vulnerable Sector Search as per Squamish Nation Policy.The incumbent with Grade 12 plus 3 years of experience may be considered for above education and experience in the “trainee” capacity. He/she must be willing to enroll and must complete certificate in a related area.
