Reporting to the Supervisor/Senior Plans Examiner, this position is responsible for examining plans, drawings and specifications accompanying more complex permit applications for all building types to ensure compliance with the applicable codes and regulations.The successful candidate will be responsible for:Providing an effective plan checking service to ensure that proposed construction projects and alterations to existing buildings and structures meet the general design and safety standards of the District prior to issuing building permits;Reviewing plans for the more complex building permit applications;Coordinating the work of the plan review function with other departmental activities;Performing on-site inspections for more complex building;Providing information, advice, and assistance to a variety of internal and external contacts;Representing the Municipality in presenting information to the Prosecutor for legal actions against violations of the Building Bylaw, andPerforming other related duties as required.The successful candidate has: thorough knowledge of the BC Building Code; ability to read and interpret BC Building Code, bylaws, regulations, specifications, and departmental policies, blueprints, legal maps, and related materials, and to recognize technical requirements and recommend corrections and changes; ability to prepare and present evidence in court as required, to prepare reports and correspondence and maintain records related to the work; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, internal and external contacts; and ability to provide orientation, direction, and guidance to staff engaged in plans examination work; registered as a Qualified Building Official 3 with the Building Association of British Columbia is preferred; and a valid BC Driver’s Licence.The preferred candidate will possess: a Diploma in Building Technology from a recognized Institute of Technology, plus considerable related experience in the building/civil engineering industry or municipal field, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.The successful candidate will be required to supply a police information check and a copy of their credentials.This posting does not list all the duties of the position, nor does it fully detail the required skills, knowledge and abilities, licenses and certificates required of candidates.
