Job Summary:The Community Mentor will be responsible to provide direct outreach support to individuals who are suspected of or diagnosed with FASD. Support includes; providing emotional support and information to promote understanding and assisting with strategies for the individual and their support network to cope with challenges faced as a result of FASD. This will often include hands on education such as establishing routines, modeling life skills and appropriate social interventions, management of child/adult development and coping strategies. Providing direct Support to family/caregiver to discuss presenting issues that they may be experiencing in dealing with the individual in their care. Providing assistance in accessing essential services and a variety of community resources. Other duties will include creating and maintaining case files in a confidential manner, acting as a point of contact for various support service agencies and as an advocate for the client.The successful candidate may be required to have flexible availability for hours outside of a standard work day.Skills and Abilities:
  • A well-defined sense of diplomacy, including solid negotiation, conflict resolution, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong knowledge of community resources.
  • Computer literacy, including effective working skills of MS Word, Excel and Outlook required.
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a team within a large organization.
  • High degree of resourcefulness, flexibility, and adaptability.
  • Able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Politically and culturally sensitive.
  • Experience and knowledge in the area of addictions and mental health.
  • Experience and knowledge in home visitation an asset.
  • High level of critical and logical thinking, analysis, and/or reasoning to identify underlying principles, reasons, or facts.
  • Strong morals and ethics, along with a commitment to privacy.
  • Must be able to be depended upon to plan and organize work effectively and ensure its completion.
  • Program planning and development skills an asset.
Education and Qualifications:
  • Degree/Diploma or Certificate in Human Services (or equivalent)
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience working with individuals and families
  • Experience supporting individuals with complex and high behaviours
  • Strong crisis intervention skills
  • Valid First Aid and CPR will be considered an asset
  • Vulnerable Sector Check issued by RCMP or City Police
  • Child Intervention Record Check
  • Clear and current drivers abstract
  • A vehicle and valid class 5 drivers license – requirement to transport clients in your personal vehicle
  • Proof of vehicle insurance showing $2 million liability coverage
