Job Description

Catholic Social Services is currently recruiting for a Contact part-time (30 hours/week) Community Mentor in the FASD Support Program in Wetaskiwin. This contract has a potential end date of August 31, 2023, with the possibility of an extension.Job Summary:The Community Mentor will be responsible to support First Nations women to reduce alcohol and/or drug use during pregnancy; to achieve and maintain recovery; support healthy pregnancies and lives for women and their children. This position will be tasked with conducting assessments and service planning. The Community Mentor will mentor women and establish relationships in order to understand the needs and requirements of the individuals. The position will work within the PCAP Model to connect the individual to appropriate social service providers and resources as necessary. Another aspect to this position is providing direct Support to family/caregiver to discuss presenting issues that they may be experiencing in dealing with the individual in their care with prenatal alcohol exposure or FASD. Providing assistance in accessing essential services and a variety of community resources. Other duties will include creating and maintaining case files in a confidential manner, acting as a point of contact for various support service agencies and as an advocate for the client.The successful candidate must have flexible availability for hours outside of a standard work day.Skills and Abilities:

  • A well-defined sense of diplomacy, including solid negotiation, conflict resolution, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong knowledge of community resources.
  • Computer literacy, including effective working skills of MS Word, Excel and Outlook required.
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a team within a large organization.
  • High degree of resourcefulness, flexibility, and adaptability.
  • Able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Politically and culturally sensitive.
  • Experience and knowledge in the area of addictions and mental health.
  • Experience and knowledge in home visitation an asset.
  • High level of critical and logical thinking, analysis, and/or reasoning to identify underlying principles, reasons, or facts.
  • Strong morals and ethics, along with a commitment to privacy.
  • Must be able to be depended upon to plan and organize work effectively and ensure its completion.
  • Program planning and development skills an asset.
Education and Qualifications:
  • Degree/Diploma or Certificate in Human Services (or equivalent)
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience working with individuals and families.
  • Experience supporting individuals with complex and high behaviours
  • Strong crisis intervention skills
  • Valid First Aid and CPR
  • Vulnerable Sector Check issued by the RCMP or City Police
  • Child Intervention Record Check
  • Clear and current drivers abstract
  • A vehicle and valid class 5 drivers license – requirement to transport clients in your personal vehicle
  • Proof of vehicle insurance showing $2 million liability coverage
