Job Description

Your Opportunity:The Wetaskiwin Hospital and Care Centre is located in the city of Wetaskiwin 70 km south of Edmonton. The Wetaskiwin Hospital and Care Centre provides services to the residents of the city of Wetaskiwin, Wetaskiwin County and the four Bands of Maskwacis. The population catchment area is approximately 35,000. The hospital has 70 acute care beds and 107 long term care beds, and is the only collection site for community patients. Our site provides a busy and dynamic work environment for those who enjoy challenging their skills as a Medical Laboratory Assistant. This position is responsible for providing and performing the highest quality service possible to the clients of the clinical laboratory. This is done in an effective, efficient, and safe manner. Specifically this position performs specimen procurement and processing, home collections using safe practices, procedures including: ECG and Holter monitor testing, clerical duties, Quality Assurance practices (including tracking of missing specimens and reports), reporting errors/incidents using appropriate documentation and reporting results within the scope of activity of a Medical Laboratory Assistant.Description:As a Medical Laboratory Assistant I, you will provide high quality service to clients of the clinical laboratory in an effective, efficient and safe manner. You will be responsible for a variety of laboratory functions including procurement, handling, processing, dispatching and testing of specimens, performing procedures and reporting results.

Required Qualifications:Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent.Additional Required Qualifications:Grade 12 Diploma. Graduation from a recognized Medical Laboratory Assistant program which includes specimen handling and phlebotomy. Excellent computer and keyboarding skills. Recent, relevant experience performing procedures in a core laboratory, within the past two years. Laboratory procedures include phlebotomy (venipuncture and micropuncture), specimen collection, preparation and referral. Experience performing ECG and Holter monitoring testing. Ability to understand and follow instruction and procedures. Effectively communicate in English both verbally and in writing. Proficiently operate a computer to input patient data. Ability to work collaboratively and tactfully in a pleasant manner with patients/clients, families, staff members and personnel from other departments in a fast paced, changing environment. Evidence of initiative and flexibility. Evidence of thoroughness, accuracy, speed and attention to detail in performance of duties. Evidence of responsibility in dealing with confidential information. Ability to work under pressure and in emergent situations, demonstrating tact and courtesy when dealing with patients, staff and physicians.Preferred Qualifications:Meditech LIS experience preferred.
