Job Description

BIOVECTRA Inc. is a leading bio-science business in Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia, focused on contract manufacturing and product development of active pharmaceutical ingredients, pharmaceutical intermediates, and bioreagents.BIOVECTRA Inc. has an opening for a Process Development Scientist, Biologics. This is a permanent, full-time position located in Windsor, NS.The candidate will be responsible for:

  • Carrying out literature searches as appropriate to currently known methods; designing new synthetic approaches as required; and preparing research plans.
  • Assisting in project evaluations including completing pro forma costing.
  • Performing lab-scale microbial fermentation work, including familiarization, process optimization and raw material evaluation.
  • Taking the generated fermentation material through midstream and downstream processing steps to final formulation and performing optimization thereof when needed.
  • Participating in the scale-up activities up to pilot plant level.
  • Supporting existing manufacturing processes, making modifications to the procedures/products as needed, and informing affected individuals to ensure a smooth transition.
  • Implementing process improvements and troubleshooting.
  • Writing experimental protocols, work instructions, and scientific progress reports.
  • Preparing purified intermediates for use as analytical standards.
  • Transferring technology and processes to technical staff, as an active member of the project team working effectively with analytical team, Quality Control group, and production personnel.
  • Following the company’s quality standard (quality management system procedures, as well as and cGMP regulations if applicable).
  • Training and supervising technicians or summer students if needed.
  • Complying with approved safety practices for the laboratory and manufacturing facilities.
The successful candidate for this position should have:
  • M.Sc. in microbiology, biotechnology, molecular biology, or biochemistry with a strong working knowledge of biologics fermentation and/or downstream processing.
  • PhD in one of the above-mentioned fields is an asset. Alternatively, a B.Sc. with at least 2-5 years of relevant industrial experience would be considered.
  • Experience in pDNA/mRNA process development work is a strong asset.
  • Previous experience in industrial fermentation and downstream processing is preferred. Experience in cGMP environment is an asset.
  • Knowledge of aseptic handling techniques, sampling, and the analysis of materials
