SCHOOL ACCOUNTANT FULL-TIME - PERMANENT The Chief Financial Officer and Secretary-Treasurer’s Department is responsible for the corporate secretary and business functions of the Division, including: the administrative management of the functions of the Board of Trustees, its committees, and related matters; legal matters and liaison with the Division’s solicitors; contract administration; records management; and the administration of the business affairs of the Division. The School Accounting Section is part of the CFO and Secretary-Treasurer’s Department and is responsible for ensuring accurate and timely processing of school financial transactions and reporting. Under the direction of the Director of Finance, the School Accountant is responsible for providing financial support to Principals and School Clerks; performing various other accounting and payment activities; acting as a consultant/resource to other WSD school administrative staff; preparing a variety of regular and ad hoc school reports. Responsibilities may include but are not limited to: • Manage the activities of the School Accounting Section with a goal to provide accurate and timely processing of school financial transactions and reporting.• Assist Principals and Head Clerks with resolving financial issues.• Oversee the banking requirements for schools• Plan and conduct monthly workshops to enhance the financial competency of Principals and school clerks• Review school financial transactions, identifying errors and assisting with corrections as required.• Assist Schools to ensure financial controls and processes are in place to achieve maximum efficiency and accuracy.• Create and develop School reports on request and as required.• Assist with school year-end and month-end functions, including account analysis and reconciliations• Assist with clearing and collecting receivable accounts• Provide financial assistance to School Run Lunch Programs• Manage change affecting the unit; develop unit goals and objectives; participates in long term planning for the unit and for the Director of Finance and Secretary-Treasurer’s Department as a whole• Other duties as assigned. Qualifications: • Completion of Financial Accounting Modules or Equivalent level of experience.• Working knowledge of school financial processes.• Minimum of five years of experience in a large accounting function is required.• Advanced Microsoft Excel skills required.• Proven experience leading formal training sessions with both large and small groups.• Demonstrated knowledge and skill in accounting is required.• Knowledge of WSD financial and administrative programs and software would be an asset.• A strong working knowledge of Division policies and procedures would be preferred.• Must be able to work independently, and as an effective member of a team.• Demonstrated skills in setting and attaining goals and objectives. Demonstrated workload organization and prioritization skills.• Strong problem-solving skills.• Demonstrated skill in communicating clearly and concisely with a variety of audiences.• Demonstrated analytical skills required.
