Job Description

The Retail Operations Manager is responsible for profitable sales and operations of the Gaspereau and Mercator Vineyards retail stores including tasting bars and onsite food and beverage service. A key priority is to uphold the integrity of the brands and consistently create a welcoming and hospitable guest experience.   • Leads the day to day activities of the team to achieve Gaspereau and Mercator priorities:sales, labour control, profit, and providing consistent, engaging on-brand guest experiences.
  • Manages daily business functions, including overseeing the point-of-sale system, daily opening and closing procedures including correct cash accounting.
  • Responsible for the weekly and bi-weekly timekeeping and on-time Payroll.
  • Responsible for the overall presentation of the onsite experience which includes staff, wine, and merchandise displays, immaculate and orderly appearance both inside and out.
  • Responsible for seasonal start-up and closedown of facilities, including identifying and requesting furniture, equipment, supplies required to achieve the operational plan.
  • Responsible for inventory management and upholding internal control standards including monthly inventory counts, minimizing tasting bar spoilage, stocking /rotating retail shelves, managing older vintages.
  • Executes quality food service and wine features program along with supporting materials.
  • Maintains purchasing and orders necessary supplies for the tasting room, retail, and Foodservice including winery cleaning supplies and oversees processing invoices in a timely fashion.
  • Develops and maintains all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) necessary for running Tasting Bar, Retail, and Foodservice operations.
  • Ensures the team operates according to standards for professionalism and customer service and that company policy and procedures are followed by all staff members.
  • Responds to customer requests, suggestions, or complaints in a timely fashion.
  • Understands the Liquor Control Act, On-premise liquor regulations, Food Safety Regulations and manages the operation in compliance with its terms. Manages liquor license and maintains necessary food handling requirements and certifications.
Responsibilities Personnel Management:
  • Responsible for staff hiring, orientation, training curriculum and implementation, development, supervision and performance evaluation. Responsible for HR decisions in collaboration with the General Sales Manager.
  • Training staff to deliver brand consistent performance and continually improve staff wine knowledge and selling skills.
  • Manages the tasting room schedule and tracks labour hours.
  • Keeps the staff engaged and focused on continuous improvement and has a strategy to maintain productivity levels in high season as well as in lower visitation days/season.
  • Assign, direct and evaluate work of employees.
  • Appraises performance, identifies development opportunities and acts as a coach/mentor when required.
  • Leads team to meet or exceed sales goals based on weekly, monthly and annual budgets.
  • Actively inspires the team to build employee unity, being a positive example for guest experience.
  • Creates and maintains a warm, friendly and highly productive team culture that is focused on providing an exemplary guest experience that builds lasting customer relationships
  • Schedules regular staff meetings, develops and drives agenda.
  • Ensure cross training of department staff with Retail systems and functions and knowledgeable with all products and services offered
  • Ensure employees follow safe and sanitary work habits.
Responsibilities Onsite Marketing & Promotions:
  • Develop annual marketing and promotional plan with activities aimed at increasing cellar door traffic and sales.
  • Execute onsite events and manage to ensure smooth and efficient execution including Oversee booking, staffing, food and entertainment, venue preparation, ensure timely setup and roll out.
  • Recommend pricing strategies to drive sales; optimize pricing for retail, flights, BTG, corkage
  • Inform, educate and motivate staff to embrace promotional activities so that they communicate effectively to guests.
  • Track success of promotions and make recommendations for future activities.
  • Stay abreast of industry trends and competition with a view to make adjustments when required.
  • Provide social media inputs for Gaspereau and Mercator under the guidance of our Marketing Partners.
Qualifications:
  • Minimum 3-5 years of retail and/or Hospitality Management experience.
  • Relevant education and/or tier one industry training.
  • Excellent guest experience delivery and selling skills.
  • Leadership skills with the ability to uphold standards, policies and procedures
  • Proficient in MS office and comfort using retail and FS point-of sales systems
  • Knowledge of and passion for providing premium wine experiences.
  • Budgeting and sales forecasting experience in retail or hospitality management.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication; organized with effective prioritization skills.
  • Proven leadership capabilities and ability to effectively train and manage staff.
  • Some traveling required for internal meetings (at Jost Vineyards-Malagash) or industry meetings.
  • Work is performed in a general production area and/or office environment with regular demands for moving, lifting/carrying/lowering up to 50 pounds, standing, walking, climbing, and pushing.
  • Normal visual, hearing, and language acuity required for correspondence and computer usage.
  • Must be flexible to work weekends and holidays.
