North Slave Metis Alliance is an Indigenous organization that represents s.35 Aboriginal rights-bearing indigenous Métis people of the Great Slave Lake area. Our mandate includes protection of our members Aboriginal rights, environment, and cultural heritage.Position: Environmental OfficerTerm: Permanent – full timeStart Date: as soon as possibleSalary: $80,000-$88,0000 (dependent on candidate experience)Benefits: health and dental plan, pension plan.Application deadline: Oct 31, 2022The Environmental Officer is NSMA’s authority on 1) review of land and/or water use applications and related engagement, and 2) climate change and environmental working groups/committees.We are looking for an enthusiastic individual who is organized and tech-savvy, with a broad comprehension of issues that northern Indigenous People are facing today. Hiring priority is given to NSMA members and northerners, but non-residents are welcome to apply.Responsibilities· Coordinate submission of technical reviews of land and/or water use applications.· Act as NSMA’s representative on local, regional, or territorial committees for water stewardship, climate change, and northern research.· Assist in planning public meetings or hearings.· Support the Environment Department Manager on the Giant Mine file, through review of technical reports, attendance of various working groups, and updates to membership.· Develop and manage budgets and project funding, as well as research new funding sources.· Engage with community members during events such as visiting mine/contaminated sites, community on-the-land trips, and environmental monitoring programs.· Plan and conduct environmental fieldwork, research, and monitoring activities with NSMA members, such as water sampling.· Maintaining an up to date knowledge of environmental, social, economic and politicalissues in the Mackenzie Valley.· Stay up to date on all correspondence, briefing notes, reports, field surveys and other documentation.· Commit to building a better community and environment.Education: · A bachelors degree in environmental science, biology, chemistry, engineering, environmental science, geography, environmental anthropology, or similar discipline or equivalent training in a field related to land use planning applied to the environment.· Basic understanding of the nature of Aboriginal rights in Canada and ongoing land claims negotiations in the NWTDesired Skills· Experience in conducting regulatory, environmental scientific and technical reviews; equivalencies will be considered.· Experience in northern developments and/or experience in the resource management regime in the NWT would be considered a definite asset.· Post-graduate degree in environmental science, biology, chemistry, engineering, environmental science, geography, environmental anthropology, or similar discipline.· Experience driving and maintaining boats, snowmobiles, ATVs.· Experience in engagement and consultation with indigenous groups.Requirements & Qualifications· Familiarity with the challenges of managing natural environments.· Have very good communication skills (oral and written), ease of speaking in public.· Ability to comprehend and critically analyze scientific documents.· Familiarity with quality assurance, documentation, environmental rules, regulations, and best practices.· Advanced MS Office skills.· Physical fitness to participate in site visits and on-the-land activities (i.e. hiking and camping in remote locations, lifting 50lbs+, occasional outdoor work in all seasons).· Must be able to fly in small aircraft and helicopters.· Class 5 driver’s license.Job Types: Full-time, PermanentSalary: $80,000.00-$88,000.00 per yearBenefits:
