Department InformationThe mandate of the Department of Justice is to administer justice, including policing, community justice, victims services and corrections in the Northwest Territories. This mandate will be carried out in a manner which respects community and indigenous values and encourages communities to assume increasing responsibilities.Job InformationYou will be responsible for preparing French version of bills, regulations and other legal material, as assigned, and for ensuring that the legal meaning expressed in both English and French versions of the legislation or other material is the same. To achieve this goal, you will be required to make decisions and recommendations as to the organization and the content of the French versions of legislation. In preparing legal translations, subject to the law and the context of the English version, the Legal Translator has as much latitude as is required to permit achievement of the goals of the instructing Department.To be successful in this role, you will have a Bachelor of Law degree plus six months experience in translation, or a Bachelor of Laws degree plus six months post-secondary training in translation. A linguistics degree will also be considered if you have more than 2 years of experience in legal translation.The Government of the Northwest Territories offers a competitive salary, an annual northern living allowance, a generous defined benefit pension plan, annual leave including the option for deferred leave, and health/dental benefits.
