Limited CompetitionThis job opening is limited to residents living within 25 kilometres of Yellowknife.Department InformationThe Department of Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA), supports capable, accountable and self-directed community governments providing a safe, sustainable and healthy environment for community residents.Job InformationAs the Relief Bilingual Emergency Medical Dispatcher, NWT 9-1-1 (Dispatcher) your primary responsibility will be to respond to emergency and non-emergency calls from the public seeking help from police, fire, rescue, or medical services. You will connect callers to available emergency services while providing over-the-phone pre-arrival emergency basic medical instructions such as talking callers though performing cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or clearing an obstruction from someone’s windpipe. Your duties may be complicated by multiple severe cases per shift, and the complete lack of emergency-specific first responders in many NWT communities (e.g., no ambulance services), requiring extended telephone support or the requirement to talk callers through self-rescue.The Dispatcher will need to be fast thinking, be able to handle multiple responsibilities, and use initiative, often while working under great pressure.To be successful in this role you will typically need a certification or degree in pre-hospital emergency medical care above first responder levels (e.g., Emergency Medical Dispatcher, Emergency Medical Responder, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic) plus two years’ experience as a first responder.ORCanadian Armed Forces Medical Technician QL3 or greater.Other combinations of relevant education and experience will be considered.Direct experience working in emergency services within the NWT, Northern community experience, and/or experience working with NWT eHealth systems would be considered assets.GNWT InquiriesInquiries Only:Department of FinanceGovernment of the Northwest TerritoriesYELLOWKNIFE CENTRE 5TH FLOORBOX 1320 YELLOWKNIFE NT X1A 2L9Tel (867) 767-9154 Extension 14106Fax (867) 873-0445jobsyk@gov.nt.caNote: If you do not receive electronic notification confirming receipt of your application, please follow up via telephone.Quick Apply
