This mandate will be carried out in a manner which respects community and indigenous values and encourages communities to assume increasing responsibilities.Job InformationThe Relief Corrections Officer supervises incarcerated persons in accordance with operational standards established in the NWT Corrections Division, in order to provide safe and secure custody, rehabilitation of persons in custody and to facilitate their reintegration into their communities. As part of the facility operations team the incumbent will ensure the ongoing provision and enforcement of policy and services in accordance with the Corrections Mission, Vision, and Value statement.This position reports to a shift supervisor and supervises up to 48 persons. Adhering to the policies and procedures of the Corrections Division, the incumbent acts as a Peace Officer while on duty and ensures the safety of the public, facility, and persons at all times. Work is carried out subject to the provisions of the Criminal Code of Canada, the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the Prisons and Reformatories Act (Canada), the Corrections Act, the Public Service Act (NWT), policies such as the Corrections Service Directive, Institutional Standing Orders, and the Human Resource Manual.The ability to act appropriately during crisis/stressful situations, with problem solving and decision-making skills are essential for this position. The incumbent is to have knowledge of practical corrections techniques and theories with the ability to exercise sound judgement.
