Job Description

Position summaryWorking within Lalme’ Iwesawtexw (Seabird Island Community School) for the 2022-2023 school year, you will provide safe transport services to the students who attend our school on an assgined route. You will be a member of an interdisciplinary, collaborative team, liaising with other professionals, students, family members, and community to provide students with a safe and reliable transport to complete their education. What you’ll do
  • Provide safe and courteous bus transportation for the students who attend the Seabird Island School. Ensuring that weather and driving conditions are taken into consideration each day.
  • Comply with all traffic and safety regulations required. This includes maintaining up-to-date knowledge of first aid procedures.
  • Perform daily inspection of bus and report malfunctions and maintenance requirements in an efficient timeframe. This includes checking the condition of the tires, brakes, windshield wipers, lights, oil, fuel, water and other safety equipment to ensure that everything is in working order prior to operating the bus.
  • Communicate with parents as needed in a courteous fashion.
  • Responsible for maintaining safety standards on the bus. This includes: boarding and exiting procedures.
  • Responsible for following the established route schedules.
  • Responsible for ensuring that the bus rules are followed and that student infractions are reported to the Principal/Vice Principal in an efficient timeframe.
  • Responsible for regulating heating, lighting and ventilation systems for the comfort of the passengers.
  • To file with Seabird Island Community School, a copy of your current and valid Class 2 or better drivers’ license and a drivers abstract on an annual basis.
  • Carry a communication device on the bus and use it as per protocols when needed.
  • Respect and abide by the line of authority as established by the Employer and communicated to the driver.
  • Communicate from a bias-free perspective.
  • Conduct his/herself in such a manner as not to bring discredit or disrespect upon the Employer or the Seabird Island Community.
  • Abide by the policies set out in the School and Band policy manuals.
  • Ensure daily and weekly cleaning procedures are met.
  • Weekly: outside power wash, floor mopped, and inside windows.
  • Other duties or responsibilities as assigned by the Vice Principal, Principal, Director or the Executive Director.
What you bring
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must hold a valid Class 2 BC Driver’s License.
  • Must hold a safe driving record for the last 5 years. (Driver’s abstract to be submitted and no more than 6 demerit points issued in the last 5 year period.)
  • Possesses a Standard First Aid and CPR Certificate (Child Component).
  • Ability to adhere to Oath of Confidentiality and Seabird Island Band Policies and Procedure.
  • Knowledge and respect of Stó:lō culture, traditions and language is considered an asset.
  • Experience working with First Nations children and the community is considered an asset.
  • Valid BC Driver’s License, Class 5.
