Job Description

The Seabird Island Band is a multi-faceted First Nations Band that includes government, business, service, and nonprofit services. We work as an integrated team to improve the health, education, and economic opportunities for First Nations people to create thriving First Nations families and communities.Position Summary:Seabird Island Community School is seeking to fill the position of Student Mentor and Counsellor for K-12 students. Essentially, your responsibility is to equip students with a variety of strategies for coping with life’s challenges: help students establish their personal goals, guiding and helping children make action plans, motivate and inspire children, identify and provide resources, referrals, and follow-ups and providing assistance in crisis situations.Seabird Island Band is committed to the health and safety of its employees and community members. SIB is mandated under provincial health care standards that all employees provide proof of vaccination for COVID-19 unless otherwise deemed exempt under the Human Rights CodeQualifications/Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree in Social Work, Psychology or Child and Youth Care, or equivalent.
  • Experience counselling children and youth from diverse backgrounds, including cross-cultural sensitivity.
  • Prior experience working with young male students in a school setting.
  • Ability to balance competing priorities and to work under pressure.
  • Flexibility and creativity.
  • Communicating from a bias-free perspective.
  • Effective Interpersonal Skills focused on: conflict resolution, maintaining confidentiality, active listening skills, maintaining commitments, setting emotional boundaries, and remains un-biased.
  • Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office Applications (Word, Excel, Internet, and Email).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to adhere to Oath of Confidentiality and Seabird Island Band Policies and Procedure.
  • Knowledge and respect of Stó:lō culture, traditions and language is considered an asset.
  • Experience working with First Nations children and community is considered an asset.
  • Valid BC Driver’s License, Class 5.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Provides counselling support and education to children and youth.
  • Assists students in methods of coping in relation to their mental health, including stress management, problem-solving, conflict resolution, effective communication, social skill enhancement, and other systems of care.
  • Maintains and promotes working relationships with community professionals.
  • Promotes positive self-identity by reinforcing the value of First Nation languages and cultural practices.
  • Participates in the ongoing planning, development and evaluation of services such as prevention programs.
  • Provides direct clinical services such as intake, assessment, treatment, and crisis intervention; consultation/liaison with community agencies and other ministry programs.
  • Collaborates with teachers to develop more effective strategies to work with special needs students.
  • Conducts suicide assessments and crisis interventions.
  • Ethics: Treats people with respect; keeps commitments; inspires the trust of others; works with integrity and ethically, upholds organizational values.
  • Help guide students through the numerous difficulties of adolescence by helping them make good choices.
  • Be a support for students: give feedback and guidance to students and work consistently to enhance mentees self-esteem through supportive, nonjudgmental discussions. Promotes students’ self-esteem and emotional well-being.
  • Providing teen and peer mentoring programs to all students.
  • Other duties or responsibilities as assigned by your supervisor, Director, or the CAO
