Job Description

The Seabird Island Band is a multi-faceted First Nations Band that includes government, business, service, and nonprofit services. We work as an integrated team to improve the health, education, and economic opportunities for First Nations people to create thriving First Nations families and communities.Position Summary:Under the supervision of the Supported Child Development Supervisor for the Supported Child Development Program, the Support Worker is to provide front-line support to children with extra support needs to assist them to fully participate in a child care setting.Seabird Island Band is committed to the health and safety of its employees and community members. SIB has implemented measures to protect and prevent the spread of COVID-19. SIB is mandated under provincial health care standards that all employees provide proof of vaccination for COVID-19 unless otherwise deemed exempt under the Human Rights CodeQualification/Requirements:

  • Early Childhood Education Certificate
  • Special Needs Certificate (or willing to obtain with in the first year of employment)
  • Current Child Care Facilities and Licensing approved First Aid Certificate
  • Experience working with children in an ECE or special needs setting
  • Valid B.C. driver’s license with reliable transportation
  • Ability to develop and maintain a warm, caring, responsive relationship with children
  • Ability to establish and maintain supportive and collaborative relationships with families and staff
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in regards to children, families and staff members
  • Ability to maintain a positive professional and non-judgmental attitude
  • Good interpersonal skills and able to work effectively with co-workers
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Must be physically and emotionally capable of carrying out the duties of the position. Medical documentation will be required.
  • Awareness and knowledge of Sto:lo traditional culture, traditions and language an asset
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record clearance
Primary Responsibilities:
  • As a team member, support children with extra support needs to fully participate in childcare settings.
  • Follow and implement Individual Service Plans including goals and suggested activities for children that reflect the choices and priorities identified by their parents and Consultant.
  • Work closely with assigned Consultant and families to review and adjust Individual Service Plan including goals for children on caseload.
  • Work as a team member with center staff to plan and implement daily activities and experiences to meet goals and objectives as documented in the child’s Individual Service Plan.
  • Demonstrate positive child-adult interactions & ensure center policies and procedures are upheld.
  • Work as a team member to provide culturally appropriate daily experiences that support and promote the development of all children in the setting.
  • Contribute to the development of inclusive early childhood environment.
  • Daily charting with each child on their case load
  • Support and facilitate transitions to other programs including school.
  • Maintain regular communication and positive relationships with families, centre staff, and the Communities.
  • Complete logs, documents and reports as required on a daily, monthly, and annual basis.
  • Plan and implement personal and professional development.
  • Maintain confidentiality; except in the case of abuse & neglect,which you are required to report by law.
  • Perform all other related duties and tasks as required based on the specific needs ofthe family, the program and the community.
