Position summaryWorking within Lalme’ Iwesawtexw (Seabird Island Community School) for the 2022-2023 school year, The Vice Principal assists the Principal in the administration, leadership, supervision and operation of School. The Vice-Principal provides quality B.C. curriculum in a learning environment that promotes language and reinforces the personal values of self-reliance, generosity, honesty, adaptability, and respect for self, others and the environment. The Vice-Principal must fulfill his/her responsibilities with high ethical and moral standards and service as a positive role model for staff and students. You will be a member of an interdisciplinary, collaborative teaching team, liaising with other professionals, students, family members, and community to provide students with holistic, culturally focused education. What you’ll do
  • Maintain a team approach in planning and organizing the delivery of the established curriculum.
  • Utilize a wide variety of cost effective methods to meet educational needs.
  • Create a smooth and effective transition between grades.
  • Assist in the realization of the educational goals and strategic plans.
  • Assist when needed in school cultural events, celebrations and ceremonies.
  • Participate in the selection of school staff.
  • Ensure that the Human Resource Policy is applied consistently in all actions concerning the hiring, training, evaluation, employee relations, performance and retention of school staff.
  • In cooperation with the Principal, complete performance evaluations with the school staff and provide accurate goals for upcoming school year.
  • Administer the BC School Act, Independent School Act, as they apply to the SIB School’s.
  • Ensure that all school staff understand and adhere to the policies, acts and regulations governing the operation of the school.
  • Ensure that the curriculum and other specialized programs are in place and are followed by teaching staff.
  • Be a positive role model by actively supporting the vision, mission and philosophy of Lalme Iwesawtexw.
  • Participate in community events and encourage school staff and students to do the same, including but not limited to the Seabird Island Annual Festival.
  • Provide instruction to elementary and/or high school classes as required.
  • Maintain a high personal standard of instructional competency to be a role model for other teachers.
  • Observe teachers and provide advice and problem solving support for teachers to improve learning outcomes for students.
  • Encourage student responsibility, personal discipline and self-motivation.
  • Maintain an educational environment that is warm, understanding and challenging for students and conducive to high morale, creativity and teamwork.
  • Ensure that life skills programs are implemented when necessary.
  • Provide parents or guardians with information on student progress in intellectual development, social development, and attendance.
  • Provide parents or guardians with information to increase their ability to create a supportive home learning environment.
  • Conduct and participate in meetings with students, parents, school staff and the Education Committee to improve teamwork and communication.
  • Oversee management and deliverables for MyED.
  • Review and distribute student report cards and interim reports.
  • Other duties or responsibilities as assigned by the Vice Principal, Principal, Director or the Executive Director.

What you bring
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education required, First Nations teaching experience an asset
  • Current practicing BC Certified Teacher qualifications considered an asset
  • Solid knowledge of and demonstrated ability in addressing a wide range of academic, social, emotional and behavioral needs of children of intermediate ages.
  • Ability to adhere to Oath of Confidentiality and Seabird Island Band Policies and Procedure.
  • Knowledge and respect of Stó:lō culture, traditions and language is considered an asset.
  • Experience working with First Nations children and the community is considered an asset.
  • Valid BC Driver’s License, Class 5.
