Job Description

We believe that when we help families manage lifes challenges and develop strategies to move forward, we create a healthy and vibrant community for all.POSITION OVERVIEW:The Respite Supervisor leads Carizon’s two Respite programs, one for children with mental health needs (Kids Club) and the other for children with autism spectrum disorder (Caroline’s Club). Both programs operate as a day program on weekends September to June, and as a weekday summer camp program during the months of July and August.RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Recruits and orients employees for both programs.
  • Schedules employees to provide adequate coverage for each program in line with Carizon’s minimum standards for staff to client ratios.
  • Oversees and supervises the daily operations of both programs on Saturdays and Sundays September to June, and on weekdays during July and August.
  • Provides “in the moment” coaching for staff in all aspects of program delivery.
  • Assesses and attends to the training needs of the staff group at any given time.
  • Provides on-going supervision and performance appraisals for all staff working in each program.
  • Co-ordinates the intake process for all families referred to the programs. This includes the processing of referrals from community partners, interviewing caregivers and providing tours of the site for families considering using the service.
  • Co-ordinates the weekly respite schedule to ensure that all available respite spaces are filled. Reaches out to families to fill unexpected vacancies as required.
  • Ensures that respite employees have all necessary information about each child attending the program, so they can provide optimal support
  • Supports the respite team in their program planning.
  • Oversees the documentation of all aspects of the program, including the records of each client’s participation in the program and the statistical records that align with the service targets for the programs.
  • Monitors all aspects of the health and safety of the clients and staff and of the respite building.
  • Monitors the quality standards for the program and actively finds opportunities for improvement
  • Monitors risks associated with the programs and carefully documents all risk related incidents according to Carizon’s policies.
  • Provides training to staff in the Safe Management Group crisis intervention training and provides coaching and support to staff as they use the techniques from this training.
  • Maintains and responds to communication from caregivers and community partners including their general inquires and their feedback and complaints.
  • Functions as part of a supervisory team that provides on-site support to other Carizon programs and services.
  • Functions as part of a supervisory team that provides on-call support to other Carizon programs in the evening and on weekends, as a part of Carizon’s on-call schedule (currently two weeks out of eight)
  • Ensures goals, objectives and plans for the Respite programs support Carizon’s mission, vision and values and are in line with the organization’s strategic plan and annual plan and with the Children’s Mental Health Department’s annual plan.
  • Is an ambassador for the programs by attending interagency meetings and making presentations in the community.
  • Functions as a member of the Carizon leadership team, attending and contributing to their regular team meetings.

EDUCATION/KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE:
  • Undergraduate degree in a human services field or combination of education and experience that is deemed to be equivalent to an undergraduate degree (e.g. experienced child and youth worker, recreation therapist, etc.).
  • Knowledge and training in children’s mental health and autism spectrum disorder.
  • Understanding of trauma informed practices.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience working with children and youth. Preferably some or all this experience is with children and youth with ASD.
  • Completed SMG training an asset with the necessity for the ability to do physical restraints.
  • Some leadership experience through a management position or project leadership role is an advantage.
  • Experience working in a recreation program, or a special needs childcare setting is desirable.
  • Requires specialized judgement and decisions for the development of solutions.
  • Requires tact, persuasion and consent to deal with emotionally charged situations on a frequent basis; actively practice de-escalation techniques.
WORKING HOURS/CONDITIONS:
  • Regular contact in person occurs with children, families and community members on a regular basis.
  • Regular use of computers and cell phones.
  • Must be able to do physical restraints.
  • September to June - required to work from 8:30am to 5:30pm on Saturday and Sunday at Carizon’s Sandhills site in Baden. The balance of the hours will be worked during the week on a flexible schedule from home and at a Carizon site.
  • July and August – Required to work 8:30am – 5:30pm Monday to Thursday at Carizon’s Sandhill site in Baden.
  • Environment can be difficult and hostile with a chance of injury and occupational health problems including burn out or injury.
  • Available to work flexible hours to support staff and meet the needs of clients. Work may include some evenings and weekend on-call shifts.
  • A police check for the vulnerable sector is required
  • Must be able to provide either proof of vaccination or documentation providing a satisfactory reason under the Ontario Human Rights Code for not being vaccinated
  • Must be legally eligible to work in Canada
