Cataract coordinator/Ophthalmic TechnicianThe successful candidate will counsel patients in cataract surgery, explain all available lens options to them, measure their eyes for cataract calculations, do all paperwork for cataract surgery as well as laser procedures and lid surgery.The successful candidate will have an opportunity to attend paid training program and become a certified ophthalmic technician as long as they agree to work a 2 year term with the clinic.The position will be covering a maternity for the first year-1.5 year, with opportunity for full time position as ophthalmic technician afterwards. Candidate will also be helping at the front desk as well.There are also opportunities for benefits if interested.The successful candidate will assist in the assessment, planning and provision of care in accordance with the Mission and Values of the clinic and its objectives, policies, standards and procedures by:· performing duties under the clinical direction and supervision of medical staff in the ophthalmology clinic;· working independently within his/her scope of practice, collaborating with other members of the health care team;· organizing the workload and fulfill the responsibilities of the position with a high degree of autonomy within established guidelines and procedures;· being accountable for his/her decisions and actions even when acting interdependently in consultation and collaboration with the healthcare team;· advocating for and providing care to the patient undergoing treatment in the ophthalmology clinic/diagnostic areas.· providing instructions to patients concerning their eye care in accordance with clinic policies and protocols;· communicating with and supporting patients and their families in their involvement and participating in decision making with respect to their vision care;· facilitating timely and accurate medical records management and ensuring each record contains appropriate documentation as per established policy of medical record content.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The Ophthalmic Technician/Ophthalmic Assistant will: · Participate as a member of a multi-disciplinary health care team;· demonstrate participation in ongoing educational activities that maintains current skills and knowledge;· participate in the learning experience of health care students as necessary;· demonstrate initiative in participating in research activities;· demonstrate skills in computer technology including graphics, database/spreadsheet management, digital imaging and computer slide production;· possess previous experience working in a fast-paced environment;· be technical minded with manual dexterity required for finer detail work;· have the ability to manage patient expectations and concerns;.· have the ability to deal with multiple tasks, tight timelines and peak busy periods;.· have the ability to communicate (written and oral skills) in a professional manner with internal and external stakeholders and deal with impacts and issues;· perform other duties as assigned.The Ophthalmic Technician/Ophthalmic Assistant will be competent at the following profession related skills: · Provide direct patient care within the ophthalmology clinic;· perform automated perimetry: providing patient instruction, observation and assistance during procedure;· perform perimetry: calibration, patient instruction, manually collect accurate details of exam.· perform work-up and coordinate all clinics: taking medical history, far acuity, near acuity, peripheral vision, depth perception, measurement of IOP, pachymetry, instilling eye drops to anesthetise or dilate the eye, dry eye testing;· perform all colour vision testing: patient instruction, observation, and accurate data collection;· perform visual field testing;· perform slit lamp examinations;· perform ocular coherence tomography;· perform manual and automated keratometry;· perform endothelial cell count;· perform manifest refractometry;· perform ultrasound A-scan;· be familiar with the use and perform testing using the IOL Master;· perform corneal topography;· set up, operate, and maintain ophthalmic equipment;· collect and prepare data of all exam results for interpretation by physician;· troubleshoot common problems with ophthalmic equipment;· supervise and teach Ophthalmic Technician/Ophthalmic Assistant students and ophthalmic medical technologist students within the scope of practice of the Ophthalmic Technician/Ophthalmic Assistant;· stock examination rooms.The Ophthalmic Technician/Ophthalmic Assistant will be accountable for: · Ensuring confidentiality of all records and information related to patients, physicians and employees;· following safe working conditions and practices in respective areas of responsibility;· carrying out duties in a way that embodies the mission and values of the clinic;· working co-operatively with fellow employees, managers, hospitals, and clinics toward the achievement of the clinics overall goals and objectives.BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: · Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) Certification is an asset· Preference will be given to those certified as a COT, however those willing to learn are welcome to apply· Recent related experience in an ophthalmology setting is an asset· In-depth knowledge of ophthalmic equipment, procedures and techniques needed to function smoothly and efficiently in a fast paced ophthalmology clinic· Proficient Computer skills (MAC / Windows / NT)· Proven good interpersonal and communication skills· Capable of coping with a mentally and physically demanding work environment· Demonstrated commitment to ongoing education and upgrading of skills· Stereo vision capabilities· Knowledge of ophthalmic anatomy and physiology· Knowledge of medical terminologyApplicants should also possess the following qualities: · A positive and friendly attitude· Ability to deal with a high volume of patients and
