Job Description

Position OverviewThe Department of Biological Sciences in the Faculty of Science invites applications for a Metabolomics Research Associate. This Full-time Fixed Short Term position is for approximately 3 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.Reporting to the Principal Investigator, the Metabolomics Research Associate will assist in the development of protocols and standard operating procedures. The position will also include collection and analytics of metabolomics samples, and be responsible for assisting with reporting on projects and budgets.Position DescriptionSummary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Collect and run complex metabolomics experimental samples and data analysis for the microbiome project; maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.
  • Contribute to development of new metabolomics research protocols and procedures or adaptation of existing protocols.
  • Prepare metabolomics samples, collect spectra, and analyze data as directed by the CMRF Head and CMRF Senior research staff.
  • Operate and maintain the lab equipment as directed including maintenance and operation of technical equipment in the laboratory in support of data provision (mass spectrometers, LC systems, informatics installations etc.).
  • Attend and participate in laboratory meetings and professional development activities as directed by the senior research staff.
  • Assist in tracking projects and expenses for reporting to the manager(s) including the WCMC Director.
  • Under limited supervision and direction, develop and implement technical metabolomics work.
  • Keep laboratory and work area clean and safe.
  • Establish and maintain effective, productive relationships with staff, peers and immediate supervisor.
  • Manage own time effectively and ensure immediate manager is kept informed daily/weekly of activities, progress of work and any issues that require attention.
  • Demonstrated strong communication, team and customer service skills and an ability to exercise judgment within established guidelines.
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Bachelors degree in Chemistry, biochemistry or closely related field required
  • M.Sc. in chemistry, biochemistry or closely related field is an asset
  • Minimum 3 years of work experience in a laboratory environment required
  • Experience working with current analytical instrumentation including HPLC and Mass Spectrometry systems is required
  • Experience in performing hands-on analytical work is required
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment is required
  • Lab research experience especially in a chemistry lab is required.
  • Knowledge and experience in data analysis software (Excel, Maven, Mascot etc.) is required.
  • Excellent communication skills is required
  • Proven organizational skills, multitasking and high attention to detail required
  • Demonstrated ability to be resourceful, creative, innovative and flexible required
  • Ability to think critically and creatively under pressure while exercising good judgement and discretion required
  • Ability to work independently to tight timelines, maintain confidentiality and deal effectively with overlapping and changing deadlines is required
  • Knowledge of University policies and procedures is an asset
  • Ability to build relationships to accomplish goals with a diverse groups within and outside of the Faculty of Science essential
