Job Description

For over 50 years Distress Centre has served Calgary and Southern Alberta, providing 24-hour crisis support, information, and resources at no cost. Distress Centre does not define crisis. We do not judge. Anyone can call us day or night.What to expect in the role:Job overviewDistress Centre is growing! We are currently looking for a Midnight Crisis Line Worker to provide overnight support for callers in crisis. You’ll be answering incoming calls from people in distress on our phone lines, including our crisis line, our 211 information line, and our partner lines with Canada Suicide Prevention.Primary DutiesThis is not an exhaustive list of duties, but meant to give you a sense of what you’ll be doing on a regular basis. Other related duties may be required.Answering Crisis Line Calls

  • The primary duty of this position is to answer crisis line calls and provide support to callers in crisis by following the Roberts’ Model of Crisis Intervention (don’t know what the Robert’s model is That’s alright, we’ll go over it in training)
  • You will be supported by a team of Crisis Centre Coordinators who are there to assist with high risk calls. You will be responsible for alerting the CCC’s if someone presents as high risk.
Answering Partner Line Calls
  • You will also be taking messages to pass along to Eastside Community Mental Health Services (formerly known as Community Resource Team) if required.
  • You will also be expected to answer calls from Canada Suicide Prevention Service.
Statistical Collection
  • Data is important for us to be able to best serve our callers and for reporting to community and funders. You will be assisting with the collection of statistical data by tracking and entering call information.
Other
  • We have team meetings from time to time to connect with one another, share information, and plan. You will be presented with options for dates and time to attend.
Hours of work and conditionsMidnight Crisis Line Workers are expected to be available for a minimum of 5 regular shifts and 1 on-call shift per month. Shifts are between the hours of 9pm and 8am and run for 4, 5, or 8 hours in length. Schedules are negotiable and flexible.Staff are currently transitioning back to the office. It is expected you will work under a hybrid model with some days in the office and some days working from home.What you bring to the role:Qualifications/Experience
  • Completion of a high school diploma.
  • Additional coursework in a post-secondary human services program (such as social work, psychology, etc.) is preferred.
  • Previous crisis line experience is an asset.
  • Gender-Based Analysis + will be required.
  • Brain Story Certification is considered an asset.
Skills/Abilities:
  • Strong critical thinking and risk assessment skills
  • Ability to work independently, but know when to consult with Contact Centre Coordinator on shift.
  • Boundary setting, termination, and documentation skills.
