Job Description

Position DescriptionLibraries and Cultural Resources (LCR) at the University of Calgary invites applications for a full-time continuing position as Research Data Management (RDM) Librarian at the rank of Assistant Librarian (Tenure-Track) or Associate Librarian (Tenure-Track). The anticipated start date is January 1, 2023.LCR is a leader in the development of innovative information resources and services, locally, nationally and internationally. In a converged environment, it successfully incorporates the resources and services of libraries, institutional and research archives, rare books and special collections, art galleries, and a university press to provide outstanding support for scholarship, learning, and the creation of knowledge.This is an incredibly exciting time as LCR invests in its technological infrastructure and seeks new and innovative ways to actualize the digital in the Taylor Family Digital Library. Currently LCR is implementing a digital asset management solution and a digital preservation system. LCR is a key player in developing and supporting the institutional strategy for research data management.Reporting to the Associate University Librarian, Technology, Discovery and Digital Services, the RDM Librarian provides services to researchers to facilitate the management, sharing and long-term stewardship of data throughout the stages of the research data lifecycle. This includes applying best practices for the collection, description, preservation, access, and reuse of research data guided by the FAIR data principles.As an academic staff position, appropriate participation and involvement in teaching, service and scholarship is expected.Responsibilities:

  • Develops RDM services that enables the adoption of effective RDM practices in response to the requirements found in the Tri-Agencys Research Data Management Policy.
  • With Research Services and library colleagues, promotes best practices for RDM that leverage tools and community expertise for Data Management Planning and Data Archiving (e.g. Federated Research Data Repository (FRDR), DMP Assistant, and Prism Dataverse).
  • Collaborates with library and campus colleagues to build shared capacity to support research data management
  • Educates researchers on best practices including funder and publisher requirements governing access to research data.
  • Collaborates with colleagues within the UCalgary community, nurturing partnerships and, as appropriate, acting as principal contact on research data management projects.
  • Works with librarians to undertake outreach, instruction, reference, and consultation to educate, advise, and support UCalgary researchers on the appropriate services and tools for RDM and to access and use data and statistics.
Qualifications:
  • Masters degree from an American Library Association accredited program in librarianship, or recognized equivalent.
  • 2 years experience working with research data.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Experience providing outreach, consultation, and instruction to a range of researchers (faculty, students, staff).
  • Experience with web technologies and content management systems.
  • Knowledge of scholarly publishing / scholarly communications.
  • Strong service philosophy and a commitment to effective user experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in both team-based and self-directed environments, and collegially and cooperatively within and across organizations.
  • Knowledge of the Tri-Agency Open Access Policy on Publications, the Tri-Agency Statement of Principles on Digital Data Management, and draft Tri-Agency Research Data Management Policy.
  • Familiarity with metadata standards and formats used in research (e.g. Dublin Core, DDI, DOI, ORCID).
  • Experience with institutional, data, or subject repository systems (e.g. Dataverse, DSpace).
