Job Description

We are helping to shape an industry better able to understand and react to global market demands, that can effectively harness science, technology and innovation to optimize productivity, and which has the know-how and resources to help chart its own long-term success in the face of challenge and change.The Research Associate (RA) provides day-to-day support for a variety of activities at the Carman research center. The candidate will play a key role in supporting all projects at the research center through activities including experiment planning, data collection and analysis, and field operations including planting, plot maintenance pollinating and harvest.Duties/Responsibilities

  • Conduct field and greenhouse research experiments according to specific protocols, exercising independent judgment and discretion as appropriate. Assist with research center projects and research seed production activities, including seed preparation for planting, pollinating, and combine/hand harvest. These are critical times for the success of the research program, so weekend work and overtime will be required at these times.
  • Operate agricultural research equipment when required. This may include tractors, planters, sprayers, forklift, and research combines.
  • Collaborate with experiment managers to collect timely data and summarize results of experiments, note problem areas during data collection, and recommend actions to be taken where needed. Computer skills and the use of Corteva proprietary software for completing these tasks will be a significant component. The handling of large volumes of data will be required.
  • Manage temporary and seasonal employees to complete plot maintenance and data collection operations according to protocols.
  • Contribute to maintaining a safe and respectful work environment.
  • Provide support for other research projects at the Carman research center as assigned.
  • Determine how to conduct experiments to meet researchers need within the allotted time constraints
  • Identify appropriate uses of company resources when conducting experiments
  • Evaluate data collection needs and expectations, determine labor need to meet those expectations and coordinate with Research Operations Lead to obtain needed labor.
Evaluate testing sites throughout the season to ensure cultural practices are appropriate to produce excellent research data, including fertility, weed and insect pest control that could impact data and seed qualityQualificationsRequirements:What expertise have you grown What do you bring to the tablePreferred skills or experience
  • Good understanding of breeding methodologies for hybrid (corn, canola) and varietal crops (soybeans).
  • Experience and understanding of molecular methodologies used for marker assisted selection.
  • Supervisory and leadership skills to effectively coordinate complex research center operations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as math and computer skills.
  • Self-motivation and ability to initiate projects, improvements, decisions and problem solving.
  • Ability to work independently while setting high expectations.
  • Ability to maintain and operate agricultural research machinery and specialized equipment.
  • Ability to obtain a pesticide applicators license and CMV license to haul trailers if needed.
  • Competency with standard Microsoft Office programs, along with handheld PC experience, and capacity to learn new software.
  • Basic knowledge of agronomy, crop production, plant development, and experimental field plot design. Ability to gain competencies with various research field and data collection equipment as well as necessary computer and data collection hardware and software.
  • Will be required to do physical lifting and work outdoors and in varying ergonomic environments
  • Additional hours and weekends during seasonal peak periods, including some overnight stays
  • Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field
  • 2 – 4 years of related experience
