Job Description

Hours: 40 hrs/wk.Location: Land O’ Lakes. Transportation included from pick up point. Rate: $20.00 per hour Summary:Native Child and Family Services of Toronto strives to provide a life of quality, well-being, caring and healing for our children and families in the Toronto Native Community. We do this by creating a service model that is culture-based and respects the values of Native people, the extended family, and the right to self-determination and through the integration of holistic, culturally based prevention services that are child centred, family focused, and community driven.Primary Responsibilities:The Overnight Camp Counsellor/Lifeguard will:

  • Be available for training opportunities June 2024
  • Be available Monday to Friday for overnight camp (June 26-August 18th).
  • Monitor and supervise all water activities.
  • Prevent accidents through proper supervision and consistent rule enforcement.
  • Respond quickly to emergencies in and out of the water and administer first aid as needed.
  • Report unsafe conditions to the program coordinator.
  • Organize and lead a variety of small and large group activities each week.
  • Be responsible for the direction, leadership, safety, and well-being of all campers.
  • Maintain focus on children #39;s needs so that appropriate programs and services are developed.
  • Identify and respond to camper behavioural issues.
  • Encourage physical, emotional, mental and spiritual growth and wellness of all campers.
  • Ensure that the site is kept clean, organized, and free of litter.
  • Communicate with parents about participant’s experiences and report concerns to Camp Leadership.
  • Assist in maintaining accurate program records including incident reports, logbook documentation, etc.
  • Know and understand ALL emergency procedures associated with the camp program.
  • Know, enforce, and follow all safety guidelines associated with the camp and all program areas.This includes but is not limited to being responsible for your campers’ safety and their whereabouts at all times.
Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills:
  • Applicants must be at least 17 years of age (within the calendar year) and cannot exceed 30 years of age.
  • Must hold a valid National Lifeguard Society (NLS) certificate, Standard First Aid with CPR Level C
  • Pass a vulnerable sector police record check (if over the age of 18)
  • Knowledge of waterfront safety, lifesaving techniques and CPR
  • Understanding of the unique dynamics that exist within First Nations, Inuit, and Métis cultures.
  • Good oral and written communication skills; initiative and respect for confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated understanding, and commitment to, integrating the Native Child and Family Services of Toronto Mission and values in to practice, service and relationships.
  • Demonstrated understanding of workplace Health and Safety practices and understanding of an employee’s responsibility under current legislation.
  • Ability to work effectively with all levels of staff, to maintain effective communication and working relationships, demonstrating strong interpersonal skills, tact, sensitivity and build strong internal relationships.
