LOCATION: Ceylon Gap Feeders Inc. (CGF), Ceylon, SaskatchewanTERM OF WORK: Permanent, Full-timeREPORTS TO: Feedlot ManagerJOB SUMMARY: The primary role of the Pen Checker is to maintain health and welfare of cattle and perform disease prevention activities. The Pen Checker will identify, pull, and treat sick or injured cattle in a timely manner to ensure cattle health. The Pen Checker plays a critical role in working with Ceylon Gap Feeder’s veterinarian to ensure cattle are treated appropriately. The Pen Checker is responsible for keeping accurate records of treatment cattle receive since this is essential for safe shipping.COMPANY OVERVIEW: Previously Borderline Feeders, Ceylon Gap Feeders is owned and operated by five top feedlot owners in Alberta. They focus heavily on consistency, food safety and environmental and economic sustainability.CORE KSA’s & COMPETENCIES: · Reliability· Attention to Detail· Adaptability/Flexibility· Integrity Driven· Teamwork· Initiative· Motivation/Responsibility· Safety Oriented· Written & Oral communication· Cattle Health Knowledge· Basic Computer Skills· Cattle Handling Knowledge & SkillsDUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:· Monitor physical condition and health of cattle; ensure cattle are pulled and treated in a humane and timely manner.· Assist veterinarians when required and as directed including, but not limited to assisting with the examination and treatment of ill animals.· Enter individual animal health into computer health program.· Take and record temperature in computer health program.· Ensure downer cattle receive proper feed and water.· Monitor pen maintenance to ensure health and welfare of cattle is maintained.· Recommend improvements to maintain cattle health and welfare.· Practice proper cattle handling techniques as directed by Feedlot Manager(s).· Euthanize animals as necessary; following all euthanasia protocols.· Report incidents of incorrect drug dosages, broken needles, injured or dead cattle, etc. to Feedlot Manager.· Ensure cleanliness of water bowls.· Fix broken boards, gates, etc.· Clear pen of any debris.· Maintain cleanliness and tidiness of treatment barn.· Clean and maintain all tools regularly.· Assist with loading, moving and processing cattle· Move cattle to correct pens and prepare cattle for transport as required.· Other duties as assigned by Feedlot Manager.EQUIPMENT: · Treatment tools· Squeeze· Machinery· Computer· LoaderKEY WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:The Pen Checker will be will have regular daily communication with members of the front end crew and the feedlot manager(s). Regular weekly and emergency contact with Ceylon Gap Feeders’ veterinarian is required. The Pen Checker worker will also have occasional communication with office staff and other managers, as required. The Pen Checker may have occasional communication with customers, contractors and delivery personnel.EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE: · High School diploma is preferred.· Post Secondary Education in a related field is an asset.· Experience working in the Agriculture industry is preferred.· Experience working on a feedlot is preferred.· Experience working with cattle and cattle health knowledge is required.TRAINING: · Firearms training is required and will be provided.· On-the-job training will be provided, as needed.· Additional cattle health or cattle handling training will be provided, as needed.WORKING CONDITIONS: The Pen Checker generally works approximately 50 hours per week. The Pen Checker schedule and working hours are determined based on feedlot needs and Pen Checkers availability. Pen Checkers are required to work weekends and holidays as scheduled.The feedlot worker is exposed to all environmental conditions working outdoors. This includes, but not limited to exposure to the elements such as sun, wind, rain, snow, hot and cold temperatures. The feedlot worker should wear clothing appropriate to the weather conditions each day.BENEFITS: Full-time, permanent incumbents of this position are eligible for company benefits programs including health, dental, vision, disability and life insurance benefits, after three months of employment. A company matching RRSP plan up to 4% is offered after one year of employment.REMUNERATION: Remuneration for this position is based on experience and quality of work. Do your part to ensure a good first impression and report any problems to your manager immediately.· We are beef producers and must focus on food safety! Ensure we follow all food safety, veterinary and cattle handling guidelines to eliminate chances of any food contamination· Attract and keep customers. Keeping our existing customers is priority number one. We can do that by treating their cattle as if they were our own.
