Job Description

The Environmental and Waste Technologies Branch requires a geoscientist specializing in hydrogeology and geochemistry. This position entails participation in various research projects aiming to understand the fate, transport and ecological effects of radionuclides across the diverse Canadian landscape, and in the context of a changing climate. The position also includes developing remediation methods and mitigation techniques for emergency response. This work includes field studies, laboratory studies and analytical applications involving aspects of physical hydrogeology, hydrology, isotope geochemistry, environmental geochemistry, underground storage, radioecology and groundwater modeling.DUTIESTypical duties for this position may include:

  • Developing research proposals and detailed plans, schedules and budgets for environmental research studies
  • Interacting with the Government of Canada and other key stakeholders
  • Executing research projects, as lead or as a member of the research team
  • Planning and implementing cutting-edge scientific research projects to grow international recognition
  • Providing technical direction and oversight to laboratory and field technologists
  • Providing technical peer review of reports and project plans
  • Preparing project reports, scientific papers and presentations to communicate results to customers or stakeholders
  • Interfacing with international scientific community, where appropriate
  • Acting as a member of the site emergency response team, as required
  • Assisting in communications with local special interest groups, as required
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Postgraduate degree (minimum M.Sc. requirement, Ph.D. considered an asset) in Earth or Environmental Sciences, with appropriate specialization in hydrogeology and/or environmental geochemistry
  • Knowledge of environmental radiochemistry, hydrogeochemical characterization and environmental modelling,
  • Experience in designing, planning and conducting research projects in both field and laboratory settings
  • Experience preparing and submitting successful research proposals
  • Experience managing projects, which includes reporting, schedule and budget monitoring
  • Experience communicating with stakeholders and presenting research to audiences with varying degrees of technical expertise
  • Demonstration of skills and abilities in preparing written scientific and technical reports, including publication in peer-reviewed journals
  • Knowledge of (and commitment to) safe laboratory and fieldwork practices
  • Ability to work effectively in multi-disciplinary team environments
