Job Description

JOB SUMMARYUnder the general direction of a foreperson or journeyperson, to service and check the operation of electric motors, generators, pumps, compressors, overhead doors, gearboxes, fans, cranes, hoisting devices and other general machines and equipment as required by a continuing preventative maintenance program.DUTIESFunctions and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Perform inspection and servicing maintenance duties of equipment and machines including such things as oiling, greasing, cleaning, replacement of sleeve and ballbearing on fractional horsepower motors, seals and packings, couplings, belts and pulleys, vibration and noise, leaks, float systems, limit switches; and to report abnormal operating conditions which may affect the safe and reliable operation.
  • Arrange for shutdown, disconnection and reconnection of specific units and auxiliary equipment when maintenance is indicated by the program schedule.
  • Assist in obtaining routine readings and the compilation of accurate preventative maintenance records.
  • Work occasionally as an assistant to journeypersons.
  • Responsible for good housekeeping following completion of servicing.
  • Observe Plant rules, regulations and procedures regarding safety, health, etc.
  • Assist in the training of employees.
  • Perform other pertinent duties related to servicing of equipment.
QUALIFICATIONSEducation
  • Completion of Grade 11 or equivalent.
Experience
  • Must have two years of pertinent experience; eg. , a Helper or equivalent in the millwright or electrical trade.
Abilities and Skills
  • Must possess the ability to acquire and maintain a knowledge of current servicing responsibilities as detailed by the preventative maintenance program and procedures.
  • Most possess the ability to work without close supervision.
  • Must have the ability to read sketches and drawings.
  • Possess good judgement, be observant, and mentally alert, and capable of following instructions.
  • Must be able to cope with heights and confined spaces.
Job/Industry Specific Knowledge
  • Must have acquired a general knowledge of lubricants, service requirements for various types of bearings, and the affects that certain environments may have on lubricants and equipment.
  • Must have an aptitude for mechanical work.
