Introduction/BackgroundMarine Atlantic is a Crown corporation that provides ferry services on two routes. The first is a year- round, 96 nautical mile daily ferry service between Port aux Basques, Newfoundland and Labrador and North Sydney, Nova Scotia. The second, offered from mid-June until late September, is a 280 nautical mile tri-weekly ferry service between Argentia, Newfoundland and Labrador and North Sydney, Nova Scotia.The Supply Chain department supports all MAIs service and materials requirements. It has two warehouse facilities, one located in North Sydney, NS and the second located in Port Aux Basques, NL. The warehouses support the material requirements, logistics, capital asset storage, repair, and disposition activities along with long term storage needs for the organization. Inventories include vessel spare parts, shore maintenance spare parts, chemicals, janitorial supplies, and a range of MRO supplies that are stored on its vessels and shore warehouse facilities.Over the past number of years, the Supply Chain department has gone through several organizational changes to meet the shifting demands within the Corporation. There have been several consulting reports completed identifying the future vision for the department. Within these reports are the immediate tasks required to support the future vision, to align and standardize its inventory practices. The requirement is to address these tasks in an efficient and effective manner to move the organization forward while minimizing the daily impact on warehouse operations with the Corporation.ObjectiveThe objective of the project is multifaceted. Firstly, to provide MAI with opportunities to move the required inventory tasks forward while minimizing the impact on departmental operations and the organizations resources. Secondly, provide the Corporation access to the latest talent entering the job market as they would be exposed to the newest technology and concepts. Students are eager to learn and make immediate impressions while offering a great infusion of energy in a work environment. For the current MAI workforce, it provides an opportunity to offer mentorship and guidance to those who are beginning their job careers. Lastly, it provides business professionals in the education community with valued insight into MAI. This insight would allow them to assist in completing project requirements while potentially attracting professionals to the Corporation to meet future MAI recruiting needs.Scope of WorkThe project is composed of multiple areas of inventory in different locations within MAIs Supply Chain department.
