Job Description

BIOVECTRA Inc. is a leading bio-science business in Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia, focused on contract manufacturing and product development of active pharmaceutical ingredients, pharmaceutical intermediates, and bioreagents.BIOVECTRA Inc. has an opening for a Formulation Scientist. This is a permanent, full-time position located in Charlottetown, PEI.The candidate will be responsible for:

  • Undertaking projects involving the development and optimization and characterization of novel or generic lipid or polymer-based drug formulations.
  • Carrying out literature searches as appropriate to currently known methods, designing new approaches as required, and preparing research plans.
  • Assisting in project evaluations including market analysis.
  • Participating in the scale up of laboratory experiments to pilot and production level.
  • Implementing process improvements and troubleshooting.
  • Understanding and evaluating analytical methods suitable for in process formulation testing and final product release.
  • Writing Batch Production Records, cGMP protocols, work instructions and scientific progress reports.
  • Presenting finding to project teams, prepare technical reports, and contribute to regulatory filings.
  • Following the company’s quality standard (quality management system procedures and cGMP regulations).
  • Training and supervising research assistants or summer students if needed.
  • Interacting with external collaborators and/or summer students if required.
  • Complying with approved safety practices for the laboratory and manufacturing facilities.
The successful candidate for this position should have:
  • Ph.D. or M.Sc. in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemical Engineering, Physical Organic Chemistry or related fields with a strong working knowledge in pharmaceutical formulation development.
  • Background in physical, organic and analytical chemistry, and fundamental aspects of the synthesis, manufacture, use and mode of action of drugs considered an asset.
  • Minimum 2-5 years industrial formulation experience, preferably in novel drug delivery, nanotechnology and complex injectable in a cGMP environment.
  • Previous experience in microencapsulation techniques and hands-on experience in formulation characterization techniques are required.
  • Previous experience with NDA, ANDA and pharmaceutical formulation development considered an asset.
  • Strong background in analytical techniques including: IR, UV, GC, HPLC, MS, thermal analysis, and protein assay methods will be an asset.
  • Working knowledge of computer software including Microsoft Word, spreadsheets, and the ability to conduct online database searches.
  • Experience in Quality by Design (QbD) and Design of Experiments (DOE) an asset.
