Job Description

To assist the Warehouse Manager and Warehouse Supervisor in overseeing material handler functions, and taking responsibility for crew activities when performing duties in all Seaforth staffed warehouses. The Lead Hand Material Handler works alongside other Material Handlers, performing regular duties, directing crew work in compliance with SOPs, and ensuring crew perform functions in a safe manner.Major Responsibilities:

  • Assists and coordinates with the Warehouse Supervisor to manage crew activities and tasks performed at all Seaforth staffed warehouses.
  • Monitors crew members work habits, effectiveness, and skill levels.
  • Mentors and acts as a role model for crew members while working alongside them.
  • Conducts toolbox meetings in coordination with the Warehouse Supervisor.
  • Assists in training crew members.
  • Assists Warehouse Supervisor in managing time parameters for crew activities such as breaks, travel to remote warehouses, as well as start and end of day timing.
  • Ensuring crew safety at all times.
  • Promptly reports to Warehouse Supervisor any safety/injury related incidents including near misses, as well as any complaints or requests from business partners.
  • Attends operations/planning meetings as and when required.
  • Accurately documents receipt and shipping of all coffee and other materials, checks crew’s work against orders for accuracy, maintains inventory reporting and records of dock boards shipped/received.
  • Interacts with suppliers, customers, and transport companies as required.
  • Maintains warehouse in a clean and orderly condition with timely removal of all waste.
  • Operates various lift equipment and other warehouse equipment in accordance with safety protocols and equipment operating procedures.
  • Works in a safe and responsible manner and complies with all Health & Safety, HACCP and GMP policies.
  • Complies with Seaforth’s environmental guidelines and procedures.
  • Respond to enquiries by phone, or email, in a prompt, professional, and proficient manner.
  • May act as a stand in for Warehouse Supervisor when he or she is absent.
Education/Experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of 1 year logistics and/or warehousing experience – food grade is an asset
  • Experience working with inventory management systems
  • Green coffee handling experience an asset
Knowledge/Skills:
  • The ability to act as a crew lead and take responsibility for a small crew
  • The ability to motivate and monitor crewmembers while working alongside them
  • The ability to read and understand operating manuals
  • Numerical skills in order to check loads, calculate trucking needs, check inventories, etc.
  • Ability to accurately and legibly document receipts / shipments, picked orders, etc.
  • Ability to liaise effectively inside and outside the organization, including good verbal communication skills.
  • Physically fit, with ability to move/lift heavy loads
  • Ability to safely and properly operate and maintain a lift truck
  • Ability to properly calibrate and operate a legal, for-trade scale
  • Knowledge and use of databases and spreadsheets to manage and track coffee flow and inventories
  • Detail oriented, excellent organizational skills
  • The ability to multi-task, meet deadlines and work well under pressure
  • Fast learner with a “can do” attitude
  • Reliable, accountable and trust-worthy
Minimum Requirements:
  • Valid lift truck certificate (training will be provided if necessary)
  • Current WorkSafeBC Approved Level 1 First Aid (training will be provided if necessary, at supervisor discretion)
  • Steel toed boots
  • Shunt truck experience required
