These are term positions, to December 31, 2023.Reporting to their Captain and Lieutenant, the Firefighter is responsible for attending emergency calls and training sessions. The Firefighter takes direction and works collaboratively with their team while attending calls and training sessions. They are responsible for learning and operating equipment and apparatus while adhering to all health and safety legislation to ensure the safety of the public and all crew members. Responsibilities
  • Demonstrate professionalism by adhering to the Wetaskiwin Fire Services motto: Pride, Honour, Integrity.
  • Respond to emergency calls when required and take directions from the Captain, Lieutenant, or Truck Officer.
  • Ensure the safety of firefighters and enforces all provincial and municipal health and safety legislation and policy.
  • Attends weekly training sessions and participate in ongoing training of equipment, procedures, policy, and other directives.
  • Under direction of officers, assist in the maintenance of Fire Services equipment, facilities, and station cleanliness.
  • Report the required repair of all Fire Service equipment (including SCBA, turnout gear, and all firefighting appliances).
  • Participate in after emergency critiques.
  • Submit all records for emergency calls.
  • Record all events of an emergency if required.
  • Participate in public education events.
  • Participate in fire inspection duties when required.
  • Administrative duties as required.
Education, qualifications, and work experience
  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Two (2) years of emergency service experience as a firefighter.
  • Hold a Class 3 driver’s licence with an air brake endorsement and not more than six (6) demerits.
  • Certificate in First Aid, CPR, and Automatic External Defibrillator (AED).
  • Must be able to operate Pumper 3, Pumper 4, Pumper 7, and Rescue 1, and apparatus stated in Classes 3 and 4.
  • Must have completed the NFPA 1001 Level 2 firefighting certificate.
  • Must have completed NFPA 472 hazmat operations certificate.
  • Have the ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions, act quickly and calmly in emergency situations, and be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Be in excellent physical condition.
  • Have personal health habits that develop and maintain resiliency.
  • Have the ability to observe, identify, and communicate about mental health matters.
  • Current clear criminal record check with vulnerable sector screening to be included with your application.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • Ensure an understanding of all departmental objectives, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of current firefighting techniques and tactics.
  • Knowledge of fire service functions and responsibilities.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work in teams and able to solve problems.
  • Knowledge of all firefighting equipment and apparatus.
  • Adaptable and knowledgeable of current technologies and strategies.
  • Ability to work in extreme conditions and stressful environments.
