Legal Services Summer StudentDepartment: Office of the County SolicitorLocation: Essex, OntarioPosition type: Student, Full Time (35 hr/week)Posting #: COE-07-24Salary: $22.50 per hourStart date: May 6, 2024Who We Are:Reporting to the County Solicitor, the Summer Student (Legal Services) is responsible for providing a wide range of administrative and legal services including file management, assisting in reviewing contracts, agreements, and By-laws for all County departments, review of privacy issues related to requests for information from the public, and completing research in support of requests for a legal opinion with respect to policies and actions of the County, and in response to claims against the County. Day In The Life:Reporting to the County Solicitor, the Summer Student (Legal Services) is responsible for providing a wide range of administrative and legal services including file management, assisting in reviewing contracts, agreements, and By-laws for all County departments, review of privacy issues related to requests for information from the public, and completing research in support of requests for a legal opinion with respect to policies and actions of the County, and in response to claims against the County.As the Office of the County Solicitor is part of the Legislative Services Department, which includes Records Management, Privacy, Community Services,and Communications, various other duties and tasks may be assigned in support of the Department as a whole.What We Are Looking For:

  • A full-time law student, enrolled at and attending classes at an accredited law school in Ontario;
  • General knowledge of municipal government, policies, processes, and the responsibility of an internal legal professional to a municipality and its Council as a whole;
  • Knowledge of legislation relevant to practicing municipal law, including the Municipal Act, 2001, the Planning Act, the Drainage Act, and the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act;
  • Ability to act firmly, yet professionally, in protecting the interests of the County when dealing with staff (both internally and at the lower-tier municipalities), the general public, external lawyers, agencies, and other levels of government;
  • Excellent grammar, spelling, organizational skills, able assess priorities, and able to work independently to meet deadlines when there are conflicting demands on time and changing priorities;
  • Understands and is able to maintain confidentiality and exercise good judgment and discretion in dealing with sensitive information and responding to inquiries; and
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, CanLII, and Lexis+.
