Job Description

Department InformationThe South Slave Divisional Education Council is the governing education body for the South Slave Division as legislated under the Education Act. Established as a corporation at arm’s length from the Territorial Government, the SSDEC consists of one member selected from each of the five locally elected District Education Authorities (DEAs) that represent the communities of Fort Smith, Fort Resolution, Hay River, Lutsel K’e and K’atlodeeche. The SSDEC serves approximately 1300 students in eight schools, is responsible for a staff of approximately 185 administrators, teachers and support staff and a budget of over 25 million. The Superintendent and staff of the SSDEC provide professional advice; educational, administrative, technical and financial services; monitoring and support and assistance to the SSDEC, community-based DEAs and their secretary treasurers, school administrators and staff, stakeholders, members of the public, and particularly, students and their families in order to ensure the delivery of quality educational programs and services within the division.Job InformationReporting to the Information Technology Manager, in this position you will service and maintain computer operations and equipment for eight schools throughout the South Slave region of the Northwest Territories, in addition to the central office in Fort Smith. You will work with teachers, principals, school secretaries and central office staff. Extensive travel is required.The following Knowledge, skills and abilities are essential for this role:

  • Computer hardware and peripheral installation and maintenance,
  • Local and wide area network installation and maintenance,
  • Server installation and maintenance,
  • Software and operating systems installation, maintenance, and administration,
  • Telecommunications and e-mail maintenance,
  • Communication systems protocols,
  • Knowledge and experience with the following systems or their updated equivalencies:
    • Disk operating systems (Apple and Macintosh, Windows XP/ 7/ 10)
    • Network operating systems (Window server, active directory)
    • Network types (Peer-to-Peer, Client/ Server)
    • Protocols (Ethernet, TCP/ IP, DNS, DHCP)
    • Software (Microsoft Office, E-Mail, Help Desk Software, Adobe Acrobat, Internet Explorer, Safari, Firefox and Chrome)
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision,
  • ability to conceptualize, plan and effectively implement a change initiative throughout the organization
  • capacity to listen, understand and respond effectively to other people, and to help or serve others and meet their needs,
  • cross cultural awareness and sensitivity.
Typically, the above qualifications would be attained by:Completion of a two-year Computer or Information Systems diploma or certificate program is the minimum educational requirement. The Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) credential is preferred. You must have proven application experience and systems analyst skills. Equivalencies may be considered.
