Job Description

Position OverviewNumber of Positions: 1Language: Bilingualism in English and French is an asset.Work Model: HybridAdditional Information:The Government Relations Advisor is responsible for raising the profile of The Co-operators Group of Companies with elected and bureaucratic decision-makers at the provincial and federal levels and for supporting the planning, development and implementation of policy advocacy. This role provides timely research and analysis of public policy and regulatory changes of importance to the organization, the Board of Directors and senior managers. Monitors government policy initiatives to identify threats and opportunities and identifies internal issues that require legislative and/or regulatory intervention. This role works closely with the Associate Vice President of Government Relations, Senior Management, and the Board of Directors to recommend and lead strategy to address these issues.What you’re responsible for:

  • Assess the impact of important legislative and public policy issues on The Co-operators Group of Companies.
  • Plan, develop and implement government relations strategies for The Co-operators Group of Companies. Manage and lead the implementation of government relations strategies that positions The Co-operators to successfully meet both Board of Directors and Senior Management deliverables.
  • Liaison with the Board of Directors, delegates, members, senior management and distribution partners regarding communication of The Co-operators public policy positions and key messages.
  • Conduct strategic research related to public policy, industry and corporate issues. Analyze and monitor legislation, updating position statements on public policy issues in consultation with senior management in the group of companies.
  • Design, manage and execute grass-roots government relations campaigns to federal and provincial elected officials and key members of the civil service.
  • Manage the legal requirements for Federal and Provincial Lobbyist Registration for key staff and the Board of Directors.
  • Represent The Co-operators in the co-operative sector through various co-op associations.
  • Develop strategic contact plans and initiate meetings with appropriate members of the legislature and civil service.

To join our team:
  • University degree in Political Science, Communications.
  • 5-7 years’ experience in a federal or provincial government or legislature, political party or corporate government relations function.
  • Excellent understanding of the Canadian political systems and public policy process and the ability to anticipate potential impacts of public policy and regulatory changes.
  • Highly competent in analysis, project management, sound business judgment, evaluation and measurement.
