If you want to be part of a forward-thinking, collaborative environment, this may be the right opportunity for you.As part of this collective goal, our Technical Engineering and Design Services Team is responsible for the design and specifications used in the construction and maintenance of our existing Provincially owned Building Infrastructure. We have an exciting opportunity available for an Assistant Director role with this team.About Our OpportunityAs the Assistant Director of Technical Engineering and Design Services, you will lead a team of senior professional staff that is responsible for the delivery of engineering and architectural designs, construction cost estimates, and inspection protocols to support the programs and work of the Infrastructure Management Division. You will also provide on-going design and engineering operations support to staff in the division.Primary AccountabilitiesRequirements of this position include providing overall leadership to the Technical Engineering and Design team to meet the needs of the Division for building forward-thinking design documents, drawings, specifications, procedures, information, and data that support the construction, maintenance and renovation work undertaken by the division. You will also contribute to the strategy and policy decisions of the Division and develop plans for initiatives to improve the performance of design, estimating and inspections, in support of the Division’s overall performance improvement objectives.You will be responsible for the development of a long-term program of design work that supports the goals of the overall asset management plans of the division. This includes leading design work related to projects that will increase the energy efficiency of our government owned buildings across the province.Qualifications and ExperienceYou have a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or university degree in Architecture and several years of progressive leadership experience in design, capital planning and project development in a construction environment. Registration as a Professional Engineer or Licensed Professional Architect (or eligible for membership) with Engineers Nova Scotia or the Nova Scotia Association of Architects is required.As the ideal candidate, you:

  • have superior skills in Engineering and/or Architectural Design;
  • have an exceptional knowledge of the Nova Scotia and Canadian Building Codes as well as typical design standards and details;
  • have significant experience working with skilled Trades People, Construction Supervisors, Architects, Design Consultants and Engineers;
  • inspire creativity and are a visionary problem solver;
  • are an effective communicator who analyzes and presents information in a clear, concise manner;
  • lead staff with compelling vision and integrity using a collaborative team approach;
  • build effective relationships with diverse clients and stakeholders.
