Job Posting- Green Cities OfficerThis position has the following requirements as per Science Horizons funding. Please ensure you meet the requirements before applying.

  • No more than 30 years of age at the start of the internship
  • Graduated from a post-secondary program

You thrive in outdoor settings and have a strong background in ecological studies or environmental science. Your excellent communication skills enable you to effectively collaborate with local conservation groups, lead outdoor activities such as hikes and events, and engage with diverse stakeholders. You are proactive, detail-oriented, and capable of conducting thorough ecological surveys to support our mission of creating a connected Halifax green network. YOUR FOCUS As a Green Cities Officer, your primary responsibility will be to support EAC #39;s campaign for a connected Halifax green network. You will work closely with our Built Environment Team to coordinate efforts aimed at enhancing three key sites: Purcell #39;s Cove Backlands, Blue Mountain-Birch Cove Lakes, and Sandy Lake. Key elements of the position will be:
  • Collaborate with local conservation groups to achieve common goals.
  • Plan and deliver outdoor events, such as hikes and bio-blitz events.
  • Engage equity-deserving communities through thoughtful programs and outreach.
  • Conduct research and gather data on park users and invasive species.
  • Participate in the Cornerstone Parks program (i.e. regular meetings, workshops) to connect with other park groups and gain insights from across Canada.
  • Possibly analyze government policies and regulations related to parkland protection.
  • Possibly create communications and promotional materials (i.e. web content, social mediaposts.)
  • Support the Sustainable Cities Coordinator with campaign and policy advocacy initiatives.
  • Other duties as required.

  • Knowledgeable about environmental issues and conservation.
  • Strong communications skills, both oral and written.
  • Experience in event planning.
  • Experience conducting research (e.g. field research, reviewing literature, and writing reports).
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and effectively allocate time to complete important productive tasks.
  • Strong organizational and priority settings skills.
  • Thrives in a collaborative team environment.
  • Computer literacy in MS Office 365 (including Outlook, SharePoint, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Available to work on the occasional evening / weekends; willing to travel within Halifax Regional Municipality.
These additional skills, areas of knowledge, and experiences are an asset:
    • Experience leading hikes or other environmental education activities.
    • Experience with municipal, provincial, federal, or tribal parks.
    • Experience working with equity deserving communities.
    • Experience working and/or volunteering in a non-profit organization.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  • Full-time position - 1 Year Fixed Term (possibility of extension based on funding)
  • $26.50 - $27.50/hour, commensurate with experience.
  • EAC has a 4-day work week with Fridays off-totaling 30/week with some flexibility in the workday. Learn more about why here.

  • Hybrid work environment requiring 1-2 days a week at our office in Halifax’s North End.
  • 3 weeks paid vacation per year (pro-rated for the 4-day work week), 1 week of paid time off during the winter office closure in December, 12 paid holidays (12 per year) and paid wellness days (10 per year).
