Department InformationThe mandate of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources is to promote and support the sustainable use and development of natural resources, and to protect, conserve, and enhance the NWT environment for the social and economic benefit of all NWT residents.Job InformationThe Inventory and Analysis Forester position is located in the Forest Resources Headquarters office of the Forest Management Division (FMD) on the Hay River Reserve, and leads the development, analysis and management of forest inventory and other forest resource information using a variety of GIS, remote sensing and modeling platforms. The position supervises a GIS Technician Intern and summer student(s) when employed in the management of forest resources data and preparation of GIS-based products and reports. The incumbent oversees large projects by administering contracts and contribution agreements.The Inventory and Analysis Forester is responsible for planning, development and updating airborne and satellite-based forest vegetation inventories, and development of information and products related to forest resource values, assessment and accounting such as timber, carbon and biodiversity metrics. The incumbent is responsible for analysis and synthesis of complex data sets to quantify forest resources and to track forest growth and changes over time; creates long term forest projections, scenarios and sensitivity analyses that enable the department to set sustainable harvest levels; and performs the lead role in managing Forest Management Division’s GIS hardware, software and geo-referenced databases of forest resources data and remote-sensing products. The incumbent operates GIS software and hardware, supervises the maintenance of spatial and non-spatial databases, and produces cartographic products (i.e. maps, charts, reports).
