Job Description

Your Opportunity:As the Indigenous Cultural Helper (ICH), you will be part of the Indigenous travel team and provide service delivery to Area 1 that is, High Level and surrounding communities. The ICH will work collaboratively within a team of AMH service providers based in High level, and will be responsive to the needs of our community partners. Reporting to the Area Manager, the ICH contributes to educating health care providers about culturally acceptable approaches, promotes respectful relationships with pertinent stakeholders, facilitates Indigenous client (population, patient and families)-centred care and builds understanding and trust between Indigenous people and health care providers. The Northern Lights shows of aurora borealis in this region can number about 300 per year. Colors of red, blue, green, and yellow flow across these magical skies and are particularly prominent during the clear nights of winter. Come to northern Alberta, where the people are warm, you can expand your horizons, and experience the beauty of the North. If nothing feels better than making a difference in the lives of families in your own community, this is the opportunity for you. In addition to a competitive rate of pay, AHS currently has a Northern Allowance in place to an annual maximum of $6,300. This allowance is non-pensionable and is payable on an hourly basis for all hours paid at the basic rate of pay.Description:The Indigenous Cultural Helper provides holistic care for Indigenous people and their families educates health care providers about respectful relationships and health care for Indigenous people and builds understanding and trust between Indigenous people and health care providers. Respecting the historical impacts of colonization, the beauty of Traditional Indigenous beliefs and cultures, the diversity of many beliefs among Indigenous peoples, and the complex Western medical approaches to health, the Indigenous Cultural Helper establishes responsive, sensitive and consultative relationships that enable trust and healing among peoples of very diverse world views and approaches to health and healing. This position has direct patient contact. This position is a key component to provide integrated and culturally appropriate health care service delivery for Indigenous patients and families. The position’s direct contact with patients and ability to provide care through Indigenous healing methods/approaches may be more culturally compatible with some patients’ worldviews and cultural beliefs concerning health and wellness, which increases the AHS capacity to provide safe and appropriate care.
